There will never be another McDreamy, though.

Summary:

  • Grey's Anatomy is an ABC medical procedural series that will begin its 20th season on March 14.
  • The show remains the longest-running primetime medical drama in American television history.
  • Netflix 's greenlit medical procedural Pulse could become Grey's Anatomy's first streaming competitor.

No matter what people think about Grey's Anatomy and the quality of its writing, it's hard to deny the impact the show has had on television. It wasn't the first and only medical procedural drama on the air, but it managed to dominate the genre and become the longest-running of all its competitors.

Many have tried to replicate Shonda Rhimes' success, but none have come close. While some viewers have decried the quality of recent Grey's Anatomy writing, the show is getting closer to premiering its 20th anniversary season on ABC, which clearly indicates that the audience demand is still there.

But things can change quickly. Grey's Anatomy's monopoly on network television doesn't mean that no show can replace it as the most popular. If anyone could give Grey's real competition, it would be a true media giant like Netflix.

Netflix’s attempt in a new genre already seems to be very promising. Pulse is going to be a collaboration project between Zoe Robyn and Carlton Cuse, starring The Horror Of Dolores Roach’s Justina Machado as the series’ first regular character and protagonist, the ER Dr. Dani Simms.

By its premise, the upcoming show reminds a perfect mix of the 90s hit ER, and the modern-day medical procedural Grey’s Anatomy.

The intensity of various twisted medical cases taking place at Miami's busiest Level 1 Trauma Center will be mixed with a complicated romance for one of the main characters. While Dani Simms may not be another Meredith Grey, potential viewers are already getting their hopes up for some steamy scenes.

According to Deadline, Netflix has been looking to dip its toes into the procedural genre for quite some time now, despite having all kinds of content already available on the platform, in order to attract the missing piece of the audience. The hope is that Pulse will show great results, and the network may try to get into legal and first responder procedurals as well.

Hopefully, though, Netflix will be more patient with Pulse than it has been with various originals before it. While the idea is great, the streamer has relied on content rotation and has been merciless to underperforming series, canceling them after a season or two. In order to compete with Grey's, the platform will have to push for length as well as quality.

If Pulse sounds intriguing enough for you, keep an eye out to be the first to know all the important news and behind-the-scenes updates.
