These are some of the hidden gems of the horror genre.

When you think of horror miniseries, Michael Flanagan and his The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher immediately come to mind. But Flanagan isn't the only one who knows how to create a chilling atmosphere.

1. The Baby, 2022

Natasha is 38 years old, works in a restaurant and is in denial about motherhood. When her best friends tell Natasha about their desire to have a child, she begins to argue and then retreats to a remote cottage by the sea to understand what is wrong with her.

But instead of the desired silence, horror awaits the woman: on the beach, Natasha catches a baby that fell from the sky that turns out to be a silent killer. She tries to hand the unwanted child over to the police and a social worker, but they all die as soon as Natasha manages to take a few steps away. The next morning, Natasha finds herself in a world where everyone believes that the baby she found is her son.

2. Monsterland, 2020

Monsterland is an anthology based on Nathan Ballingrud's North American Lake Monsters: Stories. Unlike classic horror projects, where otherworldly creatures – vampires, werewolves, mermaids – take the place of antagonists, here the villains are humans encountering monsters.

Each episode tells a separate story, but some characters cross over from one series to another. For example, Toni, a young mother who gave up her child to try to start a new life, appears in three stories. Monsterland is not only an adaptation of folklore stories, but also an examination of the struggle with personal demons.

3. Brand New Cherry Flavor, 2021

Brand New Cherry Flavor is a psychedelic thriller from Netflix that tells the story of a young, talented filmmaker's journey into the dark side of Hollywood in the early 1990s. Lisa Nova arrives in Los Angeles dreaming of making a movie. Her debut short film Lucy's Eye attracts the attention of influential producer Lou Burke, who at first seems willing to help Nova.

However, Hollywood is unpredictable, and Lisa soon realizes that she has been the victim of a deception and that her film is about to be made by someone else. Luckily, a local witch named Boro is willing to help her get her revenge. Using herbs, blood and black magic, the young director begins to prepare a terrible curse, forgetting that everything has its price.

4. The Third Day, 2020

The mystical and experimental The Third Day is divided into three parts, each corresponding to a particular season. In the first episodes, titled Summer, the main character, Sam, finds a girl in the woods, saves her from death, and takes her home to an island.

Finding himself in a settlement of no more than 100 people, Sam unexpectedly decides to stay and learn more about this strange place. The more time he spends among the locals, the deeper he immerses himself in the study of local rituals and loses touch with reality.

5. The Enfield Haunting, 2015

This mystical mini-series is based on one of the most famous cases of paranormal activity in the UK. The story begins with a call from single mother Peggy Hodgson to paranormal investigator Maurice. She is certain that there are ghosts in the house, and when Maurice arrives on the scene, he quickly finds confirmation of her theory.

The poltergeist frightens everyone, but the youngest daughter gets the worst of it – the ghost occasionally enters little Janet's body to communicate with others. As information about the phenomenon spreads throughout the town, journalist Guy joins the investigation, planning to write a book about the events at the Hodgson house.
