NCIS Spinoff Star Teases His Big Role’s Major Impact on Lead Character
A big mentor figure’s appearance is another chance for the show to find more love from fans.
The long-standing NCIS franchise is bringing its outstanding character back after his eventual departure in the original show’s season 19, and so far the upcoming spinoff has already so many things it needs to handle right to restore its reputation.
Not even having a specific release date yet, the brand new NCIS series titled NCIS: Origins has been heavily criticized months before its arrival on CBS, but a recent revelation coming from one of the show’s most significant actors seems to be serving as another beacon of hope for skeptical fans.
Taking viewers back to the 1990s, NCIS: Origins will follow NCIS’ iconic character and Special Agent in Charge Leroy Jethro Gibbs with a closer look at his personal and professional life.
Starring Austin Stowell as young Gibbs, the upcoming show is expected to dive deeper into the character’s background story, giving more details about his family and friends, some of whom he actually met while working at NCIS.
With one of Gibbs’ most important colleagues and close friends confirmed to return in the spinoff, it seems pretty clear that NCIS: Origins is indeed set to finally bring the character’s surroundings to light, and, according to the show’s actor, this is what will define Gibbs’ future path already explored in NCIS.
Ahead of NCIS: Origins’ premiere later this year, one of its lead actors, Kyle Schmid, revealed that his character’s appearance is crucial for understanding Gibbs’ further way of work at NCIS. In the spinoff, Schmid is portraying Mike Franks, initially NCIS Supervisory Special Agent and the leader of the MCRT, who actually was the first to see a huge potential in young Gibbs and helped him get a position as an NCIS Special Agent.
According to Schmid, the upcoming show will find Franks at the point where he no longer needs to move up the career ladder himself, but rather would like to “build a team that he sees as being some of the most promising agents in NCIS.”
The actor also teased the series’ primary focus on Gibbs and Franks’ developing relationship and the latter’s huge influence on the former saying that “he is still at a point where he gets to mentor Gibbs. I think we’ll get to see why Gibbs was who the world fell in love with in the original NCIS and how he came to be that way. And Mike Franks is a big part of that.”
There’s no official release date for NCIS: Origins yet, but the spinoff will arrive on CBS sometime this fall.
