And, judging by its title, the scrapped show was supposed to become something completely new in the franchise.

NCIS ’ long-standing franchise has recently been keeping busy taking a huge step forward and introducing two brand new spinoffs that this time will finally have nothing to do with the location that one team or another is based in.

The original show’s universe was following quite the same pattern back in the day, launching spinoffs based on a specific place where NCIS’ teams were operating, and titles like NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: Hawai’i and NCIS: Sydney do speak the volumes.

However, it now seems like the franchise had a big change in mind considering another spinoff a long time ago, but the show eventually never made it to TV screens.

One of NCIS’ spinoffs titled NCIS: Los Angeles had its run from 2009 until 2023 and once even subtly introduced an idea for the spinoff’s spinoff that not many viewers may have noticed.

The show’s season 4 features two episodes titled Red and Red 2 that came as some kind of backdoor pilot which was supposed to help creators see clearly whether the leading characters indeed got the audience’s attention.

The franchise thus had the idea of launching NCIS: Red as yet another spinoff series putting its focus on The NCIS Red Team, one of several mobile units that was officially linked to its department in Georgia, though in reality its members were never there.

NCIS: Los Angeles’ episodes introduced The Red Team’s leader Paris Summerskill portrayed by Kim Raver who, had it been for the creators’ decision to launch the series, would’ve become the first ever female lead among all of the shows that belong to NCIS’ franchise.

As eventually NCIS: Red never happened, the status of the first woman in charge of the whole team went to NCIS: Hawai’i’s Jane Tennant played by Vanessa Lachey.
