Most Compelling Stalker Story Ever Is a New Netflix Darling With #1 in Global Top & 100% on Tomatometer
It may be the most compelling stalker story you've ever seen on the small screen.
Nowadays it is especially difficult to choose what to watch – there are a huge number of projects being filmed. And shows that run for five or more seasons are especially frightening – even the most successful projects are not safe now. They can be canceled for the strangest of reasons, and you will never see the end of your favorite story.
And that’s when miniseries come to the rescue. They reveal the plot in only 8-10 episodes, without stretching the narrative and do not require you to sit in front of the screen for several evenings, or even weeks in a row.
On April 11, a seven-episode miniseries was released on Netflix and immediately climbed up its global top. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics rated it a perfect 100%, and it definitely deserves your attention.
Baby Reindeer Was a Play Based on Real Events
Baby Reindeer is an adaptation of Richard Gadd's one-man show of the same name. The plot revolves around the strange relationship between a writer and comedian and an obsessive fan who stalks him, leading to the most terrible consequences.
The one-man show premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019. Based on Gadd's personal experiences, the production won a number of prestigious awards.
But the show, which received many rave reviews, was the result of a painful and life-threatening experience: a woman who was several decades older than Gadd not only stalked him online and in real life. She came to his stand-up shows, told everyone she was his girlfriend, and harassed Gadd's ex-girlfriend.
Richard Gadd shared in one of the interviews:
“It’s very emotionally true, obviously: I was severely stalked and severely abused.”
In December 2020, Netflix announced a series based on the play, with Richard Gadd himself serving as writer and main star.
What is Baby Reindeer About?
Donny dreams of becoming a successful comedian, but for now he works as a bartender. One day, Martha comes into his establishment – and she looks more than depressed. Besides, the poor woman doesn't even have money to pay for her drink.
Donny, as a person who is no stranger to compassion, offers Martha a drink. And so begins the long story of the stalker and his victim.
Baby Reindeer is a Gripping Psychological Drama
Baby Reindeer is based on real-life events, which makes the story as poignant as it gets – a real-life stalker sent Gadd 41,000 emails over three years.
In just seven 30-minute episodes, the miniseries explores themes of abuse, self-hatred, shame, loneliness and mental illness. At the same time, Donny and Martha are not divided into "good" and "bad" characters: the stalker will elicit both irritation and anger, as well as sympathy for her vulnerability and loneliness.
Baby Reindeer will definitely hook you with its brutal honesty about the lives of two broken neurotics whose twisted relationship unleashes a toxic chaos of humiliation, manipulation, pity, and empathy.
