Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part I’s saddest and most unexpected death may not be the end, fans suggest. It’s merely a part of a much larger picture.

As Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 7 just hit the theaters, the audience is amazed at the scale and sheer intensity of the movie. However, there’s a sad and sudden death at the very end of the film that left most fans — especially the OG ones — shocked and shaken by its unnecessary brutality towards a fan-favorite character.

This article contains major spoilers for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part I. If you haven’t watched the movie and want to avoid spoilers, proceed with caution.

In the final moments of Dead Reckoning Part I, we saw Ilsa, one of the most beloved protagonists of the entire Mission: Impossible series, die a sudden and unexpected death, and this came as a tough blow for most of the viewers. There was virtually no need to get rid of this character, and fans are understandably both angry and confused.

Some flat-out refuse to believe that Ilsa died; others claim that the real reason for her being written off likely had to do with Rebecca Ferguson (the actress who played Ilsa) being busy with her new sci-fi series Silo; and some just don’t know what to say.

The best explanation we’ve seen so far came from the fans that try to look at the bigger picture: after all, we shouldn’t forget that we’re talking about the Mission: Impossible franchise, hence nothing is what it seems.

According to our favorite theory, the Ilsa that we saw die at the end of Dead Reckoning Part I was but an AI copycat set up by Gabriel, and the real Ilsa will make an appearance at the most crucial moment of Part II when no one would expect her.

This theory makes so much more sense than Ilsa just dying so randomly… Because that didn’t make any sense whatsoever.
