Miss Sex And the City? Watch This Comedic Marvel With 99% Tomatometer On Hulu
Two best girlfriends’ adventures in New York have never been so relatable.
Recently, we witnessed the return of the legendary friends from New York: the sequel to the cult Sex and the City was released. After watching And Just Like That, you probably need a new dose of series about inseparable girlfriends.
The topic of female friendship is surrounded by a layer of stereotypes: some do not believe in its existence, others are sure that girls’ communication is impossible without talking about men. Fortunately, there are some excellent projects that prove the opposite.
Broad City was one of the top sitcoms of the last decade, one that paved the way for web series to debut on television and changed comedy with its absurdist humor and honest female characters.
What is Broad City About?
Broad City follows the adventures of two under-thirty girls on the streets of New York. Despite all the show's absurdity – for example, stories about New York bedbugs, and tooth extraction in a drug-induced delirium – Broad City remains one of the most sincere and profound shows about true friendship.
And all of that is backed up by the show's Rotten Tomatoes rating – 99% from critics and 87% from viewers.
The friends create a small universe around their heroines, in which the main trends and events of the 2010s are preserved – not surprisingly, the series ended right at the end of the last decade in 2019, giving way to new projects that will reflect the 2020s.
Overall, the show is reminiscent of the early seasons of Arrested Development because of the constant repetition and references, but add tons of madness, colorful characters and wrap it up in a love letter to New York – that is Broad City.
Broad City Follows in the Footsteps of Sex And the City
Broad City shares a cast with And Just Like That and Sex and the City – Cynthia Nixon, beloved by millions of Miranda fans, appears in the third season.
This series can also be compared to Sex And the City because its characters also talk openly about sex, discuss emotional traumas and relationships.
The show manages to cover the feminist agenda quite broadly, while avoiding tragedy and moralizing – the show captivates with the humor and charisma of the main characters, who are not like anyone else and at the same time a little bit like each of us.
Thanks to its honesty and simplicity, the project has grown from a web series to a show with an audience of millions. After all, Russian Doll’s writer and actress Amy Poehler doesn't patronize just anyone, and she's involved in Broad City as both a producer and a guest star.
Broad City is available to stream on Hulu.
