This twist wasn’t on anyone’s bingo card for season 2.

In recent years, there has been a lot of talk about how the comedy genre has changed and what it means to be the comedy on the air today. While there is still a fair share of lighthearted sitcoms, more and more viewers are getting caught up in high-intensity shows that not only deliver humor, but drama as well.

From Barry to The Bear, comedy series may not be comedic at all at times, but viewers are there for it. Just like they are there for the shocking romantic twist in the second season finale of Minx.

While the romance between Doug and Tina has always been divisive, with half of the audience rooting for them to end up together and the other half believing that Tina is way too good for him, not many people thought the writers would explore the possibility of breaking them up. The failed proposal setup only adds more tension to the story.

As Minx star and executive producer Jake Johnson, who portrays Doug, explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the moment felt right for his character to propose and move forward together. His motivations were pure, but they didn't end up on the same page:

“Why now? Is simply because they’ve got some money, they could build something, this dream that Doug thought they had. For Doug, it was always: we. We’re winning. So why are you all of a sudden saying for the first time, no, you’re winning? I think for Doug, that fundamentally bent his brain backwards,” the actor said.

As sad as the moment was, it definitely wasn't the last we saw of Doug and Tina together. It's not easy to get over such a fight in a relationship that's been going on for decades, but it's also not easy to let go of such a relationship. There is no quick solution to such a problem, but that only makes it more interesting for the viewers.

Just like for Jake Johnson himself, the love story of Doug and Tina is important for many people, so it has to be continued in Season 3, if there will ever be a Season 3. Be sure to stay tuned for more news and behind-the-scenes updates on the Season 3 renewal of Minx!
