No matter how much your fans love you, you can still end up having your life destroyed on screen.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is now in its fifth and apparently last season. The first six episodes have already aired, and now many of the plot holes of the previous seasons have been explained.

The latest season used several time jump tricks to briefly show the lives of our beloved characters in almost thirty years.

And judging by what fans have already seen, it seems that not everyone is getting the life of their dreams.

But there is one particular character whose life was hinted to be destroyed long before season 5 premiered.

Yes, we're talking about Joel Maisel, and no, it's not the moment he decided to leave Midge for Penny Pan. Although it's hard to argue that that's when his road to doom began...

But a certain time jump in season 5 revealed that in 1987, Midge's ex-husband is actually a prisoner.

It's not explained why he ended up behind bars, but there are some hints that the reason might be Midge. For example, a certain exchange between Joel and his ex makes it clear that Joel did something to protect her, and that something landed him in jail.

While it's still not clear why he was arrested, there are some storylines that happened long before season 5 that suggest Joel's fate may have been already decided a lot earlier with the help of certain people.

For example, the well-known thugs Frank and Nicky, who appeared in the show in season 2.

In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 5, episode 4, Joel finds out about the couple's mob activities and confronts Susie about the danger Midge is in.

The boys certainly didn't like that, and it's possible they made Joel pay for his attitude. And with Susie owing them, this all could have been a "great" reason for the fight between Joel against Frank and Nicky, so we end up with Joel in jail.

Well, it's just a likely theory for now, as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 5 still has many episodes to air, and there could be any number of other reasons for Joel to become a prisoner in the future.

But one thing is clear – his bad fate is inevitable.
