Mark Sheppard Hated Supernatural’s Dirty Way of Writing Crowley Off
Justice for the demon!
Summary:
- Supernatural was The CW horror-mystery series that followed two brothers on their journey across the U.S. to fight demons.
- One of the demons, Crowley, became a major character in the storyline and was eventually promoted to series regular.
- However, Mark Sheppard, who portrayed the demon, admitted that he's not happy with the turn his character has taken.
The majority of Supernatural fans would agree that even though they were initially hooked by Sam and Dean Winchesters, their unmatched sibling dynamic, and the chills the show sent down their spines with each and every episode, it's the whole world that made them stay. The world that had so many more great characters to offer.
Crowley has always been one of the most enjoyable characters to watch, thanks to Mark Sheppard's brilliant portrayal. He was sarcastic, yet wise, had the most amazing monologues and great chemistry with all the other cast members. Perhaps that is why Crowley has been shipped with quite a few characters over the course of the series.
Starting out as an overall well-balanced character, however, Crowley's storyline diminished significantly towards his finale.
Supernatural Crowley’s Death Controversy
Speaking to fans of the show at the Supernatural NYCC panel in 2018, Mark Sheppard didn't hold back. Like many viewers, he didn't feel the show did Crowley justice.
In fact, he thought the writers had dumbed him down for at least two of his final seasons on Supernatural.
“Once they decided they needed to do something different, they tried to get rid of me without telling me that they were going to get rid of me. <...> [It was] the slowest, most painful death I've ever seen. I'd gone from being the smartest character on the show to being the dumbest character on the show in two seasons,” the actor said.
Sheppard's Crowley wasn't the only character whose development the fandom found questionable. The final scene of the angel Castiel, portrayed by Misha Collins, has also caused quite a backlash among Supernatural fans.
While there's no single turning point that anyone can point to for the Sam and Dean Winchesters, many believe that even the main characters ended the series as watered-down, simplified versions of the complex characters they were at the beginning.
Whatever you think of Crowley's finale in the series, Supernatural is still one of The CW's biggest hits and definitely worth revisiting. If you're feeling nostalgic, you can follow the Winchester brothers every step of the way by streaming the show on Netflix.
