Are we dreaming or did George Miller just confirm a Max-focused prequel?

By creating the Mad Max universe, director George Miller allowed himself a never-ending stream of projects for as long as he wishes. But admittedly, Miller isn’t looking forward to turning Mad Max into an overblown franchise with countless spin-offs no one asked for. What he wants is one more prequel following the recently released Furiosa, and his idea for it will get you more excited than you’d think.

Miller Has More Untold Mad Max Stories

While working on Fury Road, George Miller had to deeply understand the movie’s characters to make sure their mannerisms, lines, and even vehicles reflect their lives. Thanks to that process, the director now has backstories of several important characters that he couldn’t touch upon in Fury Road himself due to how condensed and action-packed Tom Hardy ’s iconic movie was.

In fact, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa was largely created based on that background work Miller had done to flesh out her character in Fury Road.

“Picking up all the backstory, all the exposition on the way, everybody working on the film — not only the cars, but all the designers, all the prop makers, everybody — had to understand the backstory very intimately in order for it to be coherent. So, we had to write the story of Furiosa and the 18 years, as it turns out, before we meet her in Fury Road,” Miller explained to Collider.

Miller Revealed Next Mad Max Prequel

But of course, Furiosa wasn’t the only character whose story had to be fleshed out for the movie with literal Mad Max in the title.

George Miller put a lot of thought into creating Max’s backstory before the events of Fury Road, and he’s ready to share it.

“[Apart from Furiosa], we also had to write the story of the year of Max in the year before we encounter him in Fury Road. So, we have that story. We wrote that as a novella, Nico Lathouris and I, and so that’s the story we have yet to tell,” the director revealed.

More Mad Max is on its way, folks, even if it’s a novella instead of a mighty impressive action flick. But who knows, maybe if the story performs well, Miller will be willing to adapt it for the big screen, or small screens, or whichever screens you have. We’re always down for more Mad Max, and the format doesn’t really matter.
