Loved Resident Alien? Check Out These 5 Quirky Shows
Because weird comedy is a cure for everything.
Our TV choices say a lot about our personalities. If we only watch analytical docudramas or super historically accurate shows, it probably means that we use these series to learn about something and try not to waste our time on meaningless stuff. But is it really bad to binge bizarre shows?
Of course, documentaries can be riveting, but sometimes you just need something to turn your brain off and help you relax. We think the best shows to give you that feeling are the weird comedies (sometimes with a little pinch of supernatural thrown in).
Resident Alien is the perfect example of a show that is both lighthearted and easy to watch, but also extremely interesting in its storytelling and with complex characters worth following.
So if you liked that show, these 5 will be to your taste as well.
1. Barry (2018-2023)
Tired of his life, a low-level hitman named Barry decides to end his criminal activities and give up being a man who ends lives. He travels all the way from the Midwest to Los Angeles to start over, but it turns out to be a little harder than he thought. In LA he has another "mark", an actor who has done wrong to a mob boss, but during the mission Barry ends up falling in love... with acting.
The action comedy-drama follows many quirky characters who end up in different comical situations that only seem fun if you do not look deeply into them. Definitely a must-watch!
2. Psych (2006-2014)
A rather old series from Steve Franks is your next choice if you want to follow some bizarre storylines. At the center of the series is a rookie detective, who convinced the police that he has… psychic powers! So he and his friend are hired to help the department solve the most complicated cases that seem impossible to crack by usual means.
Shawn and Gus keep getting into different kinds of trouble, but still it seems they are not ready to give up all the lies and start a new life.
“Psych is entertaining. Humor of this show aged pretty well. I mean people love The Office, B99, Community and this show's humor fits right there. The chemistry of Gus and Shawn is freaking hilarious like the last two brain cells in chaos lol,” Redditor brickfaced901 said.
3. Pushing Daisies (2007-2009)
If the main guys in previous series on the list were just pretending to have superpowers, the titular character in Pushing Daisies, Ned, actually has one. When he was a young boy, he discovered that he could bring the dead back to life by simply touching them. But only for one minute: if the person remains alive for more than a minute, someone else dies for the balance.
However, if he touches the person a second time, he dies again, this time permanently. The ability caused Ned a lot of trouble, so he moved across the country and became a pie maker in his own shop. But there he met an investigator who learned about the superpower and offered him a deal he couldn't refuse… Thus the many complicated adventures start.
4. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2016-2017)
Another quirky supernatural series is this one starring Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood and Hannah Marks. The comedic sci-fi detective drama revolves around Barnett's character, Dirk Gently, who claims to be a "holistic detective" who investigates obscure cases based on the interconnectedness of all things. Wood and Marks play his sidekicks, and the three of them offer the viewers some bizarre scenes.
“So much this. I thought I was going to hate this show when my husband suggested we watch it but I loved it from the first episode. So funny and delightfully weird,” Redditor Appropriate-Break-25 said.
5. Santa Clarita Diet (2017-2019)
Zombie series were never so funny. At the center of this horror comedy is a married couple of real estate agents Sheila and Joel, who live a normal life and enjoy every day in a small town in California called Santa Clarita. But everything changes when Sheila starts turning into a real zombie, craving human flesh and all that.
Joel tries hard to keep it a secret, but the changing nature of his wife is just too obvious to hide. The perfect mix of horror and comedy is exactly what fans of word scenarios would appreciate!
