The Originals' spinoff has established itself as a worthy successor to two major vampire shows in its four-year run. The final season kind of botched everything though.

In season 4, Legacies takes a darker turn: Hope switches off her humanity, which lands Alaric in a coma, the school is in shambles, and the Saltzman sisters make some questionable decisions.

Throughout the series, death is usually not something permanent and can be reversed at a moment's notice, leading both the characters and the audience to become quite detached from the subject.

Season 4 deals with the aftermath of Landon's death and what that means for Hope, who is now all alone (or so she thinks).

She forms an unlikely alliance with Lizzie, who goes rogue and initially wants to kill Hope to avenge her father, but then changes her mind (this actually makes sense, after all, it's Lizzie).

The Tribrid kills Lizzie, and we are led to believe that it's going to be this profound moment that means that the dreaded Merge will no longer be happening.

We are all but ready to mourn Lizzie when she wakes up a Heretic (half vampire, half witch) and is sired to Hope on top of that. Did you feel played? We know we did.

Lizzie's (near) death experience is devoid of all meaning whatsoever, especially when she starts comparing losing her connection to Josie to Hope and Aurora's actual loss of loved ones.

Lizzie, take a chill pill, your sister literally just went on vacation!

Speaking of which, Josie's vacation is officially the worst way the writers have ever handled an actor leaving the show.

Kaylee Bryant's exit was no surprise, so why Legacies would have Josie depart on some dumb soul-searching journey when everyone she loves is in danger is simply beyond us.

If the creators knew ahead of time that Josie was going to be an off-screen sister, why did they make such a plot decision? Honestly, it would make a lot more sense if they killed Josie instead of Lizzie – and made it stick.

This way, we wouldn't feel the second-hand embarrassment every time Lizzie talks about "losing Josie," and Josie's absence from the apocalyptic events of season 4 wouldn't seem so entirely out of character.

It's a shame that Legacies had to end on a such an underwhelming note, and we never got another season to make things better.
