Kevin Costner Revealed Unsettling Truth Behind the Horizon Saga Production
It wasn’t as easy as you may think.
Over the years, Kevin Costner 's name has become synonymous with the Western genre for many viewers. The actor has consistently landed the lead roles in movies and TV shows set in the Wild West, as well as directing and producing some of them. So it wasn't at all surprising that he came up with his own movie saga in the genre.
What was surprising, however, was to find out that even the most popular and widely recognized artists can't get studio support just because of their name. With the genre still considered unprofitable by many, Costner had to fight for Horizon to survive and finally get made.
Horizon: An American Saga Reviews
Looking at the way the first chapter of Horizon: An American Saga was received by critics, the studios might’ve been onto something by not giving the films the green light. While these numbers must be devastating, so far the critics have rated the film at 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, there are still three more chapters to fix all the issues.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Costner revealed that the saga would’ve consisted of 5 films if he was given a chance to bring the 1988 script to life in the past. Without it, the actor had to put his mind to work on the other 4 scripts.
“I tried in 2003, I tried in 2009, and no-one would make it. I didn't fall out of love with it. So basically what I did was, I did the unthinkable. Since nobody wanted the movie, I just thought I'd write four more, which probably means I should be in therapy. Really, I ought to just put a bullet in my head,” he explained.
The production of Horizon took a lot out of Costner, and not just in terms of mental effort. The actor had to juggle an ever-changing schedule with his Yellowstone appearances. Unfortunately, this resulted in Yellowstone losing Costner as John Dutton and the show being canceled.
Now, as the actor has stated, he's willing to return to the show and make amends with Taylor Sheridan on the basis of mutual respect. However, since Yellowstone already has plans for a spinoff, the chances of that happening are very slim, so viewers shouldn't get their hopes up.
If you are interested in watching Horizon: An American Saga, the first chapter will be released on June 28th and the second chapter will be released on August 16th.
