Julia Louis-Dreyfus Has Never Seen This Seinfeld Episode: 'I'm Never Gonna Watch It'
And she has a reason for it.
The idea of making a sitcom about a group of characters who weren't particularly close to each other seemed absurd. But it was with this concept – no hugging, no learning – that two friends, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, approached the management of the NBC network.
The former was making ends meet doing different jobs in television, and the latter was a promising stand-up comedian who had appeared on late-night shows.
At the pitch, they proposed that Seinfeld play himself, that the plots revolve around how the comedian gets material for his routines from everyday life, that all the characters be just acquaintances, and, most importantly, that there be no moral.
Initially, the focus was on three people: the comedian himself, his friend George (Jason Alexander), whose prototype was Larry David, and Seinfeld's neighbor named Kramer. Kramer was played by Michael Richards, an unpopular comedian whom David met while working on the TV series Fridays.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus Has Never Seen the Pilot Episode
The pilot, in which Jerry Seinfeld tried to find out whether a girl he knew liked him or not, made a disgusting impression on NBC bosses – but somehow they managed to get permission to shoot four more episodes.
At the same time, they worked on the mistakes: Julia Louis-Dreyfus joined the main cast in the second episode as Seinfeld's ex.
When the actress was cast (and later became an integral part of the show), she knew nothing about Seinfeld and had not seen the pilot. What's even more surprising is that the actress never watched it later. The actress said:
“Not only was I not aware of the pilot episode of the show, but to this day I've never seen it. And I think I'm never gonna watch it. I don't know why, it just feels superstitious.”
What Happened to Seinfeld Stars After the Show?
The cast of the show was overtaken by the so-called Seinfeld curse. None of them was able to repeat their success in another project. Only Louis-Dreyfus became the star of Veep, winning six Emmys for her role as a calculating politician.
Jason Alexander only appeared in minor roles, and Michael Richards was even involved in a scandal for making racist remarks during one of his stand-ups.
Jerry Seinfeld came up with a show called Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, in which he would drive a vintage car to a cafe with a bunch of comedy stars, where they would chat about trivial things. His guests have included old friends from Seinfeld and stars like Alec Baldwin and Chris Rock. Larry David once joked that Jerry had finally managed to make a real show about nothing.
