Jim Carrey Gets Brutally Candid on the Academy Awards' Darkest Moment
The highly-controversial incident at the Oscar ceremony a few years ago saw most Hollywood stars turn a blind eye, but Jim Carrey wasn’t about to let that slide.
Summary:
- In 2022, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards ceremony for a joke he didn’t like and walked away, having received a standing ovation.
- Unlike other Hollywood celebrities who didn’t want to address this topic, Jim Carrey shared that he was “sickened” by the on-stage physical assault.
- The actor referred to his colleagues who kept quiet as “spineless” and said that in Chris Rock’s boots, he would’ve sued Smith for such an insult.
What’s the difference between being polite and being spineless? A polite person won’t turn a blind eye to something outrageous just to keep their face. And the difference between rude and straightforward? A straightforward person will speak their mind without picking fights with anyone. Jim Carrey proved to be the one straightforward and polite man in Hollywood after the notorious Will Smith incident.
Will Smith Got Away with Physical Assault
In 2022, the Academy Awards ceremony was darkened by an unprecedented turn of events. Will Smith didn’t take a liking to host Chris Rock’s joke about his wife’s hairstyle and chose the worst way to show his displeasure: in front of the Hollywood’s elite and working cameras, he went on stage and slapped the host.
It was a shocking moment for the Hollywood stars and viewers back home alike. Live physical assault on the Oscar’s stage was unheard of, and yet it happened right before everyone’s eyes… But as it turned out, those eyes were happy to go blind.
Later that evening, Will Smith won his first-ever Academy Award — and received a standing ovation from the audience who’d just watched him assault Chris Rock. Most actors didn’t address the incident from that point forth, unwilling to put themselves in the line of fire; but some, like Jim Carrey, were not about to let that slide.
Jim Carrey Slammed Hollywood for Playing Blind
One of the very few people who actually spoke out and publically judged Will Smith for his assault on Chris Rock was Jim Carrey. The iconic comedy star didn’t hold back during his interview with CBS Mornings and said that he was disgusted by how Smith got away with it. Carrey was disappointed by his colleagues who kept silent.
“I was sickened. I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. <...> A lot of people worked really hard to get to that place and to have their moment in the sun. <...> You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words,” Carrey explained.
The actor said that in Chris Rock’s boots, he would’ve sued Will Smith for at least $200M immediately, because such an insult will “be there forever,” and it can’t go unpunished. And yet, in this case, it did — and for Jim Carrey, it felt as if he was slapped in the face himself and watched a guilty man walk away like it was nothing.
