James Gunn Reveals Three New DCU Superheroes and Fans Are Split
The new head of DC is serious in his ambition to make the new DCU great: with Nathan Fillion joining the cast, we’re in for a fun ride — but some fans are not happy.
Apparently, Superman: Legacy, the first full-blown movie of James Gunn ’s new DCU, will feature more than a couple of other superheroes for David Corenswet ’s Man of Steel to interact with. Recently, director Gunn revealed the three new additions to the cast — and while the actors are great, part of the fans are discontent with them.
Apart from the new Superman himself, the first DCU entry will feature Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Gardener’s Green Lantern; they will be played by Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class), and Nathan Fillion (Castle… And virtually every James Gunn movie to have ever Gunned), respectively.
While there aren’t many discussions regarding Isabela and Edi, the fans are split on Nathan: even though it’s common knowledge that Gunn loves the actor, some of the fans think that Fillion will prove to be a massive miscast as he’s “too old” for the part.
“Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardener is… A choice. A wildly, wildly misguided one,” wrote James Preston Poole from Full Circle Cinema.
Though James is far from alone in his assessment, many people don’t see anything wrong with Nathan Fillion putting on the green cape — some even call it predictable.
“Gunn casting Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern was so predictable. (Him being Guy instead of Hal is… Less so.) Not in a bad way, just in a ‘Well, of course, he did’ way,” thinks J.A. Prentice from SFWA.
But then again, some people are straight-up excited for the future that Gunn promises with this choice: they praise him for both going for Guy Gardener’s Green Lantern instead of Hal Jordan’s and for picking Fillion for this role.
“The most unhinged thing Gunn has done as DC chief so far is make Guy Gardner the first Green Lantern to appear on-screen. He is throwing the playbook out the window,” Jack McBryan from The Direct states.
Apart from the blatant Nathan Fillion haters, the fan community remains uncertain about this cast, but the general consensus is to “let Gunn cook.” So far, the director’s been pumping out great superhero movies — and considering how many of those included Fillion, we bet James Gunn knows what he’s doing casting him as Guy Gardener.
