With James Gunn overtaking DC, the fans of this universe hope to finally receive the movies they deserve — but only if the director resolves this huge issue of DC.

For many years, the battles between Marvel and DC fans have been resulting in the same revelation: while DC had the best animated series, Marvel had undoubtedly the best movies. That, however, is expected to change in the nearest future.

With both DC and Marvel universes going through a massive relaunch, there’s new hope for DC movies: James Gunn, one of Marvel’s best directors, has recently became the co-CEO of DC Universe, and with his outstanding track record, everyone’s expecting him to finally pull this universe out of the dark.

One of the major problems of DC movies is how they downplay the role of an individual. The audience falls in love with the personality of a hero, not with their abilities or the evil they’re fighting against. With DC, there’s been way too much focus on the drama and the giant existential threats the heroes were confronting.

No one fell in love with Tony Stark because of his costume or his role in the Avengers. Fans love this character for who he is: sometimes arrogant, always ironic, secretly kind, and very… humane.

This is why no one cared about the army of other Iron Men like they cared about Tony: he was a real living person with flaws and pros.

This has been the point of struggle for DC for a long time. Taking the time to perfect the special effects and battle scenes is great, but hardly anyone would care for the outcome if they only know the superhero costume and not the human being behind it.

What DC needs is to show more of the human, not the super in its heroes.

With James Gunn as the new head, DC has all the chances at achieving that. Without diving any deeper, it’s enough to mention Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. In this franchise, the balance of personal and heroic was pretty much perfect, and that made the story both compelling and epic in an amazing way.

If there is someone who can fix this DC’s biggest problem — it’s James Gunn.
