It's Official: Years Later, Sherlock Holmes Returns
Some might argue that the iconic detective has never left to begin with, but this time, his return will be different.
Summary:
- Sherlock Holmes is one of the most iconic fictional characters of all time, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887.
- 137 years later, writer Gareth Rubin received the blessing of the author’s descendants to continue the famous saga.
- In Rubin’s take on the story, James Moriarty and other secondary characters will get more time under the spotlight.
Whether you like it or not, Sherlock Holmes is the man “who never lived and will never die.” Ever since being created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, the iconic detective has been ever-present in popular culture: for 137 years, Sherlock Holmes has been investigating mind-boggling cases, uncovering conspiracies, and catching criminals. And he’s not stopping any time soon, we’ll tell you that much!
Sherlock Holmes Will Be Back on Pages
94 years after Conan Doyle’s death, the author’s descendants recently gave their blessing to writer Gareth Rubin (The Turnglass & The Winter Agent). Rubin will write a new book series about Sherlock Holmes, but this time, it won’t be just the iconic detective under the spotlight: titled Holmes and Moriarty, the new books will give his archnemesis just as much attention and time.
It won’t be the first time that a new author shakes the dust off Holmes’ 137-year-old cape and hat: in 2011 and 2014, famous writer Anthony Horowitz published two official Sherlock Holmes novels, The House of Silk and Moriarty. Ten years and countless live-action adaptations later, Gareth Rubin will pick up the quill after him.
Sherlock Holmes Was Conan Doyle’s Headache
For an outsider, it might seem like creating such a legendary and popular character like Sherlock Holmes is any writer’s dream; and to some extent, it is. But for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the world’s obsession with the first-ever consulting detective quickly became a problem as because of Holmes, no one cared about his other characters.
Boxer Rodney Stone and Professor George Edward Challenger forever remained in the shadow of Sherlock Holmes, and this was bugging their creator until the end.
This new revival of the Holmes saga aims to fix it. According to Richard Pooley, the great-grandson of the famous author and the holder of the Sherlock Holmes rights, they want to first give more time under the spotlight to the secondary characters of the detective story, like James Moriarty, Mycroft Holmes, Sebastian Moran, Irene Adler, and others, they want to later branch out to other Conan Doyle’s stories.
