Is Netflix Cooking Up a Western Series Prequel to Sons of Anarchy?
Similar to Taylor Sheridan's universe, it looks like we might see a Sutter-verse.
Summary
- There's a new series coming to Netflix from the creator of Sons of Anarchy.
- It will be a Western drama set in the 1850s.
- Fans are convinced that one detail points to a direct plot connection between the two shows.
We all know that Taylor Sheridan 's Yellowstone is not only one of the most popular franchises on American television, but also a powerful family drama that spans at least two centuries. In addition to the original series, which starred Kevin Costner as family patriarch John Dutton, other Sheridan-verse examples, 1883 and 1925, tell of the Duttons' past, how they survived the years after the Civil War and during the Great Depression, and how the Duttons eventually settled on a ranch in Montana.
And now Netflix is cooking up something in the Western genre as well. The showrunner of the upcoming project is none other than Kurt Sutter, best known as the creator of the iconic Sons of Anarchy, which aired on FX from 2008 to 2014. The show already had a spin-off that ended just last July, so there's a good chance that Sutter will want to continue the story in some way or another.
However, if Netflix's new Western project is indeed connected to Sons of Anarchy, it will obviously be a prequel, which could make it a great competitor to Taylor Sheridan's franchise. Let's take a look at why Kurt Sutter's new project could be a prequel to FX's iconic series.
News about Kurt Sutter's New Series
Currently, Kurt Sutter has decided to move from FX to Netflix, developing two projects for the streaming giant: a Western series in question, as well as the horror film This Beast, which was announced back in 2021. As for a potential prequel to Sons of Anarchy, it has the working title The Abandons.
The series will be set in the 1850s and will follow Fiona Nolan, played by the gorgeous Lena Headey (Cersei Lanister in Game of Thrones ). In the story, Fiona is an Irish immigrant who has recently purchased a home in Oregon, where she now lives with her four adopted children. However, the society of the Old West is extremely cynical and unforgiving, so the wealthy families of European aristocrats will try to force Fiona and her family out of their own home. In addition to Headey, the series stars Gillian Anderson, Lucas Till, Aisling Franciosi, Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers and Lamar Johnson.
The series will consist of ten one-hour episodes. Filming was scheduled to begin last year, but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it will not begin until the spring of 2024.
What Could It Possibly Have to Do with Sons of Anarchy?
According to Kurt Sutter himself, the idea for The Abandons was in his head long before Sons of Anarchy was created, so it can be assumed that the stories of both shows have been thought out and reworked by Sutter several times, with some direct or indirect references. So it makes sense that the showrunner would want to tie the two stories together.
And according to fans, that connection has already been made. The fact that the two main characters of the upcoming series will be named Elias and Dahlia Teller. Yes, the last name alone has led fans to speculate that these are possible ancestors of Sons of Anarchy's Jax Teller. But that's jumping the gun, since we don't know any details about the characters. It's quite possible that this is nothing more than Sutter's nostalgic tribute to his former cult project.
Well, we'll just have to wait for the show and find out. Apparently, The Abandons won't be released until 2025.
