Some viewers feel that the title character's personality was reduced to a soulless murderer in season 2.

Summary:

  • Reacher season 2 has caused backlash from some fans who claim that the writing has gotten worse compared to season 1
  • Episode 7 led to even more concern, as they believe that Jack has committed a downright evil deed
  • Others, however, say it is absolutely in character for him, as Reacher has always been more of an antihero

The second season of the Reacher TV series has certainly proven to be much more divisive than its predecessor, with some fans claiming that it is a massive downgrade in almost every aspect, while others say that the backlash is exaggerated and that it is great.

Episode 7, which premiered on January 12, 2024, didn't make things any easier, as one particular scene in the hospital caused even more polarizing reactions, leading some fans to believe that Jack now looks more like a villain than a hero we should be rooting for.

Reacher Goes Villain Mode In Episode 7

When Reacher visits Lt. Marsh to learn more about the deal between Langston and A.M., the corrupt cop makes an unwise attempt to reach for his gun, which immediately ends badly for him.

But before he meets his untimely end, Marsh tells Jack that while he himself knows nothing about it, Grant, a hitman who was run over by a car in episode 6, is still alive and might have the information Reacher needs.

This leads to Reacher and Neagley sneaking into the hospital disguised as nurses to confront him and after a quick interrogation they learn the location of the exchange.

But what some viewers found most disturbing was that after getting everything he needs from Grant, Reacher instantly kills the bedridden hitman by injecting an air bubble into his vein, resulting in a rather painful death.

Fans feel that the outright murder of an unarmed and defenseless person in cold blood seems very out of character for Jack, who is supposed to be a heroic protagonist we all want to see succeed.

They say it was completely unnecessary, because by revealing this crucial information to Reacher, Grant has effectively signed his own death sentence, so all Jack had to do was walk away and leave him to his fate.

According to them, such a drastic change in character, along with the fact that no one heard Grant's screams, which is incredibly unrealistic, may be just another indication of how much worse the writing has become in season 2.

Reacher Has Been an Antihero All Along

But not everyone believes that Reacher's character has become nonexistent and turned into a soulless Terminator, as others believe that all of this fits perfectly with him being an anti-hero instead of a knight in shining armor.

Reacher has always been more in tune with being judge, jury and executioner himself, rather than delegating those roles to people who may not ultimately bring justice to the bad guys, or at least not in the way he thinks is appropriate.

They compare him to other antiheroes like The Punisher or Deadpool from Marvel Comics, who have rather "unique" views on morality, to say the least, but ultimately try to do good by taking out the bad guys, albeit with questionable methods.

Considering that Reacher goes after people who kill members of his team, and Grant was involved in Russo's death in the previous episode, this part of the fanbase sees nothing wrong with Jack taking out another henchman.

Either way, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so it is up to you to decide whether or not the writing for the second season of the show has dropped in quality.

The eighth and final episode of Reacher season 2 will premiere on January 19, 2024.
