Inside Out 2 Somehow Got Inspired By Adam Sandler’s Unhinged R-Rated Thriller

Almost ten years after the first movie’s release, Inside Out 2 is coming back with a renewed plot and some much more adult matters to think about.

The upcoming animated film, which is set to be released this June, will remain its focus on the main character Riley, but with drastic changes as Riley stops being a kid and turns into a teenager — and these changes reportedly had a very weird source of inspiration.

What Will Inside Out 2 Be About?

As it has been revealed before, Inside Out 2 will introduce several new emotions that will appear alongside Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger in the Headquarters which is basically Riley’s head. Among the newcomers the most anticipated one is probably Anxiety, voiced by actress Maya Hawke, that shows up when Riley decides to join a hockey team.

Though it may come as a surprise for many, the movie’s creators were so focused on presenting the character in the most natural way possible that they got to derive its behavior features from Adam Sandler’s crime thriller Uncut Gems.

How an R-Rated Thriller Inspired the Most Wholesome Kids Movie

Released in 2019, Uncut Gems to this day is thought to be Sandler’s finest acting work which goes in contrast with all his iconic comedies that literally cemented his status in Hollywood.

The plot follows Jewish-American jeweler whose gambling addiction leaves his family drowning in never-ending debts — but once he discovers a very rare uncut Opal, the character embarks on a very risky game that jeopardizes his miserable position even more.

During an interview with Polygon, director Kelsey Mann revealed that Anxiety in the upcoming movie was pretty much influenced by Adam Sandler’s character.

As Mann later explained, Uncut Gems’ chaotic cinematography and a highly tense plot eventually made Sandler go full in his performance showcasing the character’s growing anxiety as he proceeds with worse and worse decisions of his own.

Thus, according to the director, Uncut Gems’ visuals came as a huge helping source for Inside Out 2’s treatment of anxiety.

Turns out that Adam Sandler’s hit got one more merit to its collection — after showing Sandler as a brilliant dramatical actor, Uncut Gems also inspired one of Pixar's best movies.
