Incredible Hulk Director Revealed Ambitious Plans For Canceled Sequel
Louis Leterrier wanted to introduce an alter ego for the character, along with several Red Hulks to oppose him.
While every Marvel fan knows that the MCU began with the release of Iron Man in 2008, with Robert Downey Jr. capturing the hearts of countless viewers as Tony Stark, the second installment of the franchise seems almost forgotten.
The events of The Incredible Hulk, directed by Louis Leterrier and starring Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, were barely mentioned in subsequent films.
In fact, the character was even recast, with Mark Ruffalo appearing as the green giant in 2012's Avengers and continuing to play the Hulk to this day.
Fans have been clamoring for a second Hulk solo movie for years, but with the changes the character has undergone, it's not even clear whether it's necessary.
Bruce Banner, along with most of the original members of the superhero team, has retired from being one of the central characters of the MCU and is now mostly a supporting character.
This is a bit sad, because in a recent interview with ComicBook, Louis Leterrier shed light on the unused ideas he had for the sequel to his 2008 film.
According to the filmmaker, we would have seen several Hulks straight from the comics, such as the Grey Hulk, who is an alternate persona of Bruce Banner, and several Red Hulks.
Leterrier also pointed out how drastically different the current Hulk is from his original idea for the character, which he enjoyed developing.
While he liked the She-Hulk TV series, some scenes, like him doing yoga, made Louis realize, "Yeah, we're very far from my Hulk now."
While it is unlikely that we will ever see the Grey Hulk, as the character's evolution from green monster to intelligent being seems to be complete and final, we may still see the Red Hulk on the big screen relatively soon.
According to unconfirmed rumors, he could appear in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, portrayed by Harrison Ford.
Liv Tyler is also rumored to reprise her role as Betty Ross, who is transformed into the Red She-Hulk.
Given all this, maybe Mark Ruffalo will make an appearance, even if it is a cameo, as it would be odd given the history between his and Ford's characters.
Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled for release on July 26, 2024, although it may be pushed back in light of the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
