Hulu Just Quietly Added a Perfect War Movie With 92% on Rotten Tomatoes
If you need a perfect war movie, look for a perfect director.
Recently, Christopher Nolan finally won his first Director Oscar for the history epic Oppenheimer. Nolan had to wait a long time for the main award, even though there are no bad movies in the director's filmography.
Even Nolan's very first full-length film, Following, made for only six thousand dollars, received rave reviews from both viewers and film critics. And Nolan served as director, screenwriter, producer, editor and cinematographer.
Nolan's films are sometimes too difficult to understand, they're complicated (Tenet, we're looking at you), but among the director's puzzle projects, one stands out for its apparent simplicity at first glance – Dunkirk.
Dunkirk Is Based on Historical Events
Nolan dedicated his tenth feature film to historical events – the evacuation of more than three hundred thousand soldiers during the Dunkirk operation.
The story is told simultaneously from three points of view. Each story unfolds over a certain period of time: a week on land, a day at sea, an hour in the air. By the finale, the puzzle pieces fit together into a single plot.
Dunkirk Is Nolan’s Technical Triumph
In typical Nolan fashion, the film was shot on a grand scale: real World War II planes were used on the set, pyrotechnics were used to create epic explosions on the beach, and thousands of extras participated in the battle scenes.
During awards season, Dunkirk claimed the title of Oscar winner in multiple categories, and Nolan was nominated for the prestigious Best Director award for the first time.
Dunkirk is first and foremost a technical masterpiece – there is a minimum of special effects, and thanks to outstanding direction, the movie's events do not look like just a set of action scenes, but like a carefully recreated military chaos.
This is largely due to the experimental script, which weaves together three stories that could each make their own worthy war drama.
Tarantino Called Dunkirk One of the Best Movies of the Decade
It is probably impossible to immediately understand the peculiarity and significance of Dunkirk.
Even Quentin Tarantino, the cinephile that he is, appreciated its idea and scope only after the third viewing — only to immediately call Dunkirk one of the two best films of the last decade.
Dunkirk Is Now Available on Streaming
And now you can watch this war epic for yourself – Dunkirk was recently released on Hulu.
