Despised not only by her own husband, but also by many of the men she meets along the way, Maddie tries to bring attention to the case of Cleo Johnson, a black victim whose death was reported only in African-American newspapers. Caught up in the intricacies of an investigation, the reporter leaves her past behind to get to the bottom of the case.

Portrayed by Natalie Portman, who delivers a great performance throughout the first few episodes of the show, Maddie is a heroine you want to follow, so the show easily grabs the attention of viewers. However, not too many viewers praise its quality. Lady in the Lake has a 73% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to an audience score of 52%.

While audiences want to get into the story, if not for the mystery, then for the sake of Natalie Portman, many find that it lacks structure. Too many characters and too many subplots make Lady in the Lake chaotic and hard to follow, even though it has the potential to become truly interesting.
