The hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother has been a beloved show for many years.

Throughout its super successful 9-season run, the showrunners sure knew how to make their viewers laugh, cry and even feel annoyed.

However, when it came to the ending of the show, it left millions of fans so disappointed that some have even argued it overshadowed the entire show and its success.

But while the finale was certainly controversial, it turns out it might not have been the biggest problem with the series.

The final season of HIMYM followed the group of friends in the days and hours leading up to Barney and Robin's wedding and Ted meeting Tracy, aka The Mother.

However, the conclusive episode put the audience through an emotional rollercoaster when everyone learned that Robin and Barney got divorced, Barney had a child, Ted's wife died from a terminal illness, and the show ended with Ted going back to Robin.

After the final episode aired, it quickly turned from being highly anticipated to one of the most disappointing episodes in television history.

That said, some fans are convinced that it's not necessarily the ending that is the issue but the fact that the entire final season is revolving around one weekend, and all the arcs are crammed into the very end. It seems as if the showrunners ran out of ideas and stretched the season out until the final episode, where they settled a season's worth of storylines in a hurry.

Instead, fans would've preferred to see the events taking place at a slightly slower pace throughout the season and with more attention to detail, as then the finale wouldn't have felt so rushed.

First off, many wanted to follow along on Ted and Tracy's journey while their relationship unfolds and for Tracy's passing to take up an appropriate amount of space and time.

Secondly, after building the friends-to-lovers story between Robin and Barney, it would've been good to see what led up to their divorce in more detail. And when it comes to Lily and Marshall, balancing careers and another child would have definitely made for interesting viewing.

Now, when it comes to Ted and Robin, their reunion at the end of it all makes sense, though many people thought it was somewhat unfair, as The Mother was robbed of a happy ending.

However, the two did have a lot of love for one another, and their biggest struggles had to do with their life goals being incompatible.

Ted wanted a wife and kids, while Robin's dream was to travel the world. In the end, they fulfilled their ambitions, which allowed them to start over.

Most fans don't seem to have a problem with this outcome, but they feel like a build-up toward this wouldn't have hurt either.
