How I Met Your Mother is indisputably among the most iconic sitcoms out there. With its massive viewer base, it has been keeping everyone's attention for almost a decade.

Unfortunately, as it often happens with long series, its ending was a massive disappointment for most fans, crossing out years of plot and character development.

Let's go over the main reasons why the HIMYM ending was so terrible, and then, if you happen to share our opinion, we'll treat you with an amazing alternative.

Barney and Robin's marriage

The last two seasons were borderline exclusively spent building up this alliance. The entirety of the last season literally focused on the week before the marriage, and the show does everything to make both us and the characters believe that they'll make it and be happy against all odds.

Seeing all of that wasted in a single episode, with a single line… It's just insulting, honestly, both the outcome and the pacing.

Tracy's passing

We've been waiting for nine seasons to learn how in the hell Ted met his kids' mother. At the very end of the show, we get to know her a bit, and she turns out to be the loveliest person in the entire series. Ted's finally happy, and the story can finally be complete… And then in one minute of screen time, they just kill the most anticipated and beloved character. Really, guys?

Ted and Robin's reunion

During all the seasons we watch painfully how Ted's affection for Robin hurts him, and are shown all the hundreds of reasons why they're an awful pair and shouldn't be together. Ted wants stability and security, and Robin values and guards her independence above anything. They have failed a few times, and then they randomly get back together. It's such a "Here we go again" moment, especially after Tracy!

Most people agree that the canon How I Met Your Mother ending is a mess and a disappointment that makes little sense. They claim that it ignores character development, previous plot lines, and the viewers' feelings… But there's something you need to know.

There is an official alternate ending where Tracy is alive and well, Barney and Robin are still together, and everyone's happy. If you haven't watched it already, do it now — you'll love it!
