How Did Aragorn's Parents Die And Why It’s Important In LotR?
The fate of Aragorn's father influenced the future King greatly.
Aragorn is one of the main characters in the movie trilogy The Lord of the Rings that is based on John R.R. Tolkien's works. In Peter Jackson's movies, he was portrayed by actor Viggo Mortensen.
Although everyone knows what a great warrior Aragorn was, watching The Lord of the Rings left viewers knowing next to nothing about his past, including what exactly happened to his parents, who played a fairly important role in the history of Middle-earth.
In the Third Age, Aragorn's parents, Arathorn and Gilraen, married, and little Aragorn was born a year later. Two years later, his father was killed by an arrow in the eye by the Orcs while fighting shoulder to shoulder with the sons of Elrond.
This made baby Aragorn the new heir to the thrones of Gondor and Arnor.
Of course, this was not the greatest position to be in, since Sauron had servants who specifically tried to hunt down and kill all representatives of this bloodline, so Arathorn’s distant relative Elrond agreed to accept the child and his mother.
In Rivendell, he accepted Aragorn as his adopted son and gave him the name Estel, which means "hope," and kept the young Numenorean in the dark about his parentage for a long time. Only when Aragorn was 20 years old did the Elven lord feel that his ward was ready for responsibility of being a true heir to the Gondor throne. At that point, he told him his real name and title.
After Aragorn had left Rivendell, his mother also left the elven lands. She continued to mourn her husband and died before she could see her son's triumph.
The aforementioned sons of Elrond, Elladan and Elrohir, continue to play an important role in Aragorn's life because of their friendship with Arathorn. They even accompany Aragorn through the Paths of the Dead and are involved in other important events on the way to the destruction of the Ring. Although neither Arathorn nor the brothers Elladan and Elrohir appear in the Lord of the Rings movies, the death of Aragorn's father and his relationship with the sons of Elrond set Aragorn on his path to the throne of Gondor and the destruction of the One Ring.
