House of the Dragon: Who Is Daeron Targaryen and Will He Appear in Season?
The writers saved the appearance of one of Alicent's sons for the most epic and bloody events of the series.
Numerous characters were introduced to us in House of the Dragon, but many details were still left out. Where, for instance, is Daeron, the son of Queen Alicent and King Viserys? Although Daeron is only hinted at in Season 2, he is a significant member of the Targaryen bloodline, and Alicent's offspring will be involved in the war.
Apparently, it was not originally planned to integrate Daeron into the show. However, following the Targaryen family tree update on HBO's official website, we can conclude that the writers have changed their minds — probably with George Martin 's assistance, too.
Who Is Daeron?
Daeron is the fourth child and third son of King Viserys and Queen Alicent. He was born some time after Rhaenyra gave birth to Jacaerys. Unlike his brothers, Daeron is a kind, and gentle young man. He was very different from the rest of the family, so it will be interesting to see the black sheep among Viserys' children.
He is the most polite and well-mannered of the children and Alicent's favorite son. However, having grown up in the shadow of his brothers, he is meek and would rather take orders than give them.
Like the rest of Alicent's children, Daeron grew up as a rival to Rhaenyra's kids. Viserys' attempts to unite the family came to nothing. Even the fact that Daeron and Jacaerys had the same nurse and were foster brothers did not help. Attending the same feasts and training sessions only increased the enmity between the two branches of the Targaryens.
In the books, when Viserys dies, Daeron is the only son who mourns his father's death. At the beginning of the war, he flies to Oldtown on his dragon Tessarion to help Lord Ormund Hightower. Daeron helped protect Ormund's army from destruction, earning him the honor of being called the Daring.
Before leaving for Oldtown, Daeron claimed the dragon Tessarion as his own.
Daeron may be kind, but he is capable of cruelty. While advancing with Ormund Hightower's army, Daeron burns the city of Bitterbridge in revenge against Lady Caswell for the death of Maelor (Aegon's youngest son) during riots in the city.
Although Daeron has not yet made an appearance on the show, he was mentioned in Episode 2 of the second season when Otto Hightower revealed that he was visiting Alicent's other son, who is more trustworthy and intelligent, in Oldtown.
Will Daeron Appear in Season 2?
Daeron will not be involved in the events of the second season. Showrunner Ryan Condal says the character will emerge when the storyline reaches the right amount of strain.
Daeron will most likely appear in Season 3, when the civil war is at its worst.
What Is Daeron's Fate in Fire & Blood?
After the fall of King's Landing, Aegon II vanishes and Daeron ascends to the Iron Throne. Daeron is slain on the battlefield shortly after, during the Second Battle of Tumbleton.
His death's circumstances are unclear — the lifeless body of Daeron was never found. Aegon III Targaryen's rule a few years later saw the appearance of imposters posing as Daeron, but none of the liars ever had proof to back it up.
