One major distinction between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon ends with Season 2.

While a spiritual successor to Game of Thrones in many aspects from the general setting to political scheming as a crucial part of the plot, House of the Dragon has many noticeable distinctions from its mother show. However, the upcoming Season 2 will get rid of some of them, “leaning into the Game of Thrones formula,” star claims.

HotD Always Felt Smaller Than GoT

Perhaps the biggest and most obvious distinction between the two TV shows is their character roster. Game of Thrones followed multiple characters from different dynasties and origins, located at time across the world from each other — whereas House of the Dragon focuses solely on the Targaryen dynasty as its title implies.

This far more modest selection of main characters comes with its own consequences: namely, the fact that HotD doesn’t really show its viewers Westeros.

House of the Dragons Season 1 goes wherever the Targaryens are, and that’s only a handful of locations. Thanks to that, the series itself has always felt much smaller than Game of Thrones, and while it doesn’t go against its original design in any way, that was something many fans found not quite appealing after GoT’s sheer scale.

HotD Season 2 Will Lean Into GoT

However, for better or worse, the days when House of the Dragon was confined to the Targaryen capitals are admittedly over. Deadline recently spoke to the TV show’s main cast, and Matt Smith ( Daemon Targaryen) teased a significant tonal shift in S2.

“This time, [House of the Dragon] leans into the formula of Game of Thrones of old, where you’re out exploring different worlds and pockets of the world of Westeros,” the actor shared.

This spells great news for those who craved more outside action in HotD. With several Targaryens setting off to various corners of the Seven Kingdoms, including even the Wall far in the North, there will be much more ground to cover and many more characters to keep track of — which is an exciting change of pace, indeed.

And a one that will definitely prevent House of the Dragons from feeling as small as it was in Season 1.
