Cregan Stark was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it character in the trailer, but his role in The Dance of the Dragons is significant.

In the first season of House of the Dragon, we were shown many representatives of the main houses of the Seven Kingdoms: in addition to the Targaryens, we saw the Hightowers, Velaryons, and Lannisters.

However, the family that played a key role in Game of Thrones was unrepresented in the first season of House of the Dragon. Did the silent and stern Northern Starks really not participate in the events that were about to bring blood to the Seven Kingdoms?

Of course they did, and even played an important role, while managing to be true men of honor, which is extremely difficult in the conditions of war.

The hero of these events was the young, but already experienced Cregan Stark, who will appear in the second season. Cregan, played by Tom Taylor, can be seen in the Black trailer standing shoulder to shoulder with Jacaerys.

Cregan Stark's Early Years

When Cregan was only thirteen years old, his father died, leaving the young wolf in charge of the most influential and powerful house in the North. However, he was too young to rule himself, so his uncle Bennard Stark was appointed regent.

The years passed, and now that Cregan was sixteen, his uncle was reluctant to diminish his influence and hand over the reins of power to the rightful lord. Young Cregan would not tolerate such an attitude. He ordered his own uncle and his sons imprisoned for challenging his decisions. After that, Cregan was finally given all the power in Winterfell that was rightfully his.

During the events of the Dance of the Dragons, both opposing sides – Rhaenyra, the rightful heir to the throne, and her brother Aegon, who believed that the throne should not be given to a woman – would like to have the Starks as allies.

Rhaenyra sent her son Jacaerys to the Starks (as we saw in the season one finale), who befriended Cregan Stark, reminding him of his younger brother who had died earlier.

Jacaerys and Cregan Stark formed an alliance and sealed it with a promise to marry their children in the future: Cregan's one-year-old son and Jacaerys' future daughter. There were even rumors that Jacaerys had taken Cregan's illegitimate sister, Sara Snow, as his wife, and this became another argument for Stark in favor of the Blacks.

Immediately after the agreement with Jacaerys, Cregan gathered two thousand northerners and sent them to help Rhaenyra. This force was called the Winter Wolves. But this was only the beginning – Cregan promised to gather at least ten thousand more warriors.

In the end, however, Cregan's army never actually engaged in battle. By the time he gathered his forces and moved south to help Rhaenyra, she was already dead. Her brother Aegon ruled in the capital, but the forces of his opponents were still numerous, and they defeated Aegon's supporters.

Cregan's Influence on The Situation After The War

The king, who refused to surrender, was probably poisoned by his own inner circle and then Rhaenyra's son, Aegon III, sat on the throne. By this time, Cregan had finally reached the capital with his army of northerners.

Cregan decided to restore order in the capital, following all the laws of honor to which the Starks were accustomed. He proclaimed that although King Aegon was his enemy and deserved to die, the murder of the king was treason and a terrible crime, and all those responsible must be punished.

However, those condemned to death soon realized that death could be avoided if they asked to join the Night's Watch at the Wall. Cregan, as a Northerner, respected this right and allowed them to become brothers of the Night's Watch for the rest of their lives.
