This man is much more important than he seems.

The second season of House of the Dragon has begun on Max. There is a new king in the Red Keep, clearly unprepared for the heavy burden. The frivolous Aegon II dotes on his son Jaehaerys and even brings the boy to a meeting of the Small Council, where he distracts the noble lords.

But serious matters are being discussed: Otto is worried that the Starks and Arryns are not responding to letters from the Greens, and the forces of the Blacks have already occupied the Gullet, through which ships enter King's Landing.

If you've seen the first episode of Season 2, you may have noticed a man who was clearly irritated by little Jaehaerys' behavior at a meeting of the Small Council, and whom Aegon wanted to make his son's personal pony.

Fans Are Disappointed with Tyland Lannister's Portrayal

If you haven't read the book, you might think he's a minor character who has no effect on the events of the story. But that's not true – this man is Tyland Lannister, one of the key participants in the Dance of the Dragons. And viewers who read Blood & Fire were unhappy with how he was portrayed on screen.

“I’m starting to get annoyed with how this show is depicting Tyland Lannister, possibly the smartest person on the Greens side and an absolute freaking chad during and after the Dance of the Dragons,” Reddit user Valjorn wrote.

Warning: The following text contains spoilers for the future events in House of the Dragon!

Tyland Lannister will indeed become one of the most influential characters in the series in the future, and perhaps the writers are deliberately making him seem unimportant in order to reveal him later.

Tyland Lannister's Story During and After the Dance of the Dragons

During the events of the Dance of the Dragons, the Lannisters took an active part in the civil war. House Lannister was led at the time by two twin brothers: Tyland and Jason. Tyland was in King's Landing, serving as Master of Ships and later Master of Coin. Jason ruled the Lannister lands and their troops from Casterly Rock.

When the war began, King's Landing was captured by Rhaenyra's forces and Tyland was taken prisoner. He was horribly tortured, disfigured and blinded, but he never revealed the secret of the treasury's location. Later, when the capital was occupied by Aegon's forces, Tyland was released and reinstated.

Lord Jason, meanwhile, led the Lannister forces into battle and was killed in action. The civil war ended with the victory of Prince Aegon's supporters, who ascended to the throne. Tyland Lannister, though crippled, retained his position and his power began to grow greatly.

However, the victorious king Aegon II could not rule for long. He was severely wounded during the war and died six months after taking the throne. His own children also died, so the throne was eventually taken by Rhaenyra's young son, Aegon III.

The Council of Regents, which then ruled in the king's name, decided to appoint Tyland Lannister as Hand of the King – essentially the second man in the state. Tyland, who could have used this power to take revenge on his former enemies, acted more wisely.

He began telling everyone that he had memory lapses and could no longer remember who was on whose side in the Dance of the Dragons. Ser Tyland held the position of Hand for the rest of his life, earning a reputation as a wise and fair lord.
