House of the Dragon May Be Welcoming One Unexpected Game of Thrones Star Soon
With little to no care for the original source, everything is possible.
If there's one thing that's already clear about the Game of Thrones prequel, it's that the creators aren't giving too much respect to the source material and aren't afraid to make changes to the story if it means making it more entertaining or avoiding technical difficulties.
We've already seen some changes in the ages of the characters or the flow of the story, and more are coming in season 2, according to the casting news and leaks from the set. With all that in mind, it's easy to imagine HBO producers making a small gesture to all the original Game of Thrones fans and inviting a character back.
Some would say it's impossible since the events of House of the Dragon take place roughly two centuries earlier, but there are some characters old enough to pop up quickly and affect the story in unexpected ways.
In fact, actress Carice Van Houten, who portrayed the Red Witch Melisandre, has already hinted to fans that she may return. A little while back, Van Houten went on Instagram and posted a fan story pleading for her to return and reminding everyone that the character was supposedly over 400 years old, so it would definitely be possible.
While the idea sounds fun, and the show’s lovers usually enjoy a good cameo, there are still some people who don't think Melisandre should make her entrance. First of all, House of the Dragon season 2 is already confirmed to feature another witch, Alys Rivers, and secondly, it would mess with the original world structure too much.
What fans would probably enjoy much more than an attempt at such fanservice would be a separate miniseries exploring Melisandre's background. That's not something that's ever been publicly discussed, though, so there's little to no hope for it coming to fruition.
However, if you are interested in what House of the Dragon season 2 has to offer, be sure to keep an eye out for any news or behind-the-scenes updates. The series is rumored to return in the summer of 2024. In the meantime, you can watch the first season on Max.
