House of the Dragon Is Coming: Everything We Know About Season 2
The great war is approaching.
On June 16, the second season of House of the Dragon, a Game of Thrones prequel in which the powerful Targaryen dynasty unleashes a bloody war for the Iron Throne of Westeros, will begin streaming on Max. In anticipation of the release of the second season, we are sharing available information about the upcoming episodes.
Warning: the text contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 1.
House of the Dragon Season 2 Will Be More Like Game of Thrones
The events of the second season take place during the Dance of Dragons, a long-running war between representatives of the Targaryen clan for possession of the Iron Throne. The main forces will be concentrated between the "black" forces of Rhaenyra and Daemon and the "green" army loyal to Aegon. Both sides will continue to kill each other's children, dragons, and distant relatives (this is a Game of Thrones prequel, after all).
The sequel will have eight episodes, not ten like the first. Showrunner Ryan Condal assures that the series will have at least four seasons. According to Condal, the second season will be much more like Game of Thrones: there will be less exposition, but the number of epic battles will increase significantly. There will be no more multi-year time jumps; the plot will follow a straight chronology.
Will We See the Battle of the Gullet in Season 2?
Various sources have mentioned that the second season of House of the Dragon may cover the pivotal Battle of the Gullet. This is one of the first major battles in the history of the Dance of the Dragons, pitting the dragons of Aegon, Aemond, Rhaenyra, and Jacaerys against each other.
Some fan theories also claim that the showrunners will stretch out the events leading up to the Battle of the Gullet, with the battle itself being delayed until the third season. If it is the case, the second season will end with the capture of King's Landing and Rhaenyra's reunion with the Iron Throne.
House of the Dragon Season 2 New Cast Members
In addition to the main cast, a number of new characters have been announced for the second season, including a powerful witch from Harrenhal named Alys (Gayle Rankin) – she will side with the Greens. Another ally of the Greens will be Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox), Alicent's brother and son of Otto Hightower.
The new season will also feature Jon Snow's distant ancestor, Cregan Stark, played by Tom Taylor. It is known that he will play a key role in the plot of House of the Dragon, but whose side Lord Stark will take is not specified. George R.R. Martin has already seen rough versions of the first two episodes and was more than pleased.
