The saddest thing about the Targaryen internal war is that Aegon did not even want to become king in the first place.

House of the Dragon follows the gloomy story of Dance of the Dragons — the civil war within the Targaryen family which erupted due to succession issues.

Rhaenyra Targaryen is King Viserys' official heir, but Viserys' wife, Alicent Hightower, begs to differ. In the end of season 1, she essentially usurped the power and crowned her oldest son, Aegon II Targaryen, without asking for permission.

The most ironic part of this all is that Aegon was not craving the crown at all. He clearly enjoys sex and drinking a lot more than governing. However, now that he is crowned already, there is a reason why he will never give this up now.

Fans have noticed that Aegon suddenly looked very happy when the crown was put on his head, despite the fact that he was depressed about it several minutes before. The explanation is simple: the love he received from the crowd during his coronation was something he never actually received from his own family.

"[It] really looks like Aegon has never felt like he's experienced love at this point. His father doesn't seem to give him much attention, his mom is constantly only ever ranting about the need for him to take power to save his family, his grandad just sees him as pawn. He's married to a sister who he doesn't love, and it looks like any sexual experience he's had only comes from forcing himself on people or prostitution, so he's had no romantic love either," Redditor Indominus_Khanum said.

Now that the common folk finally bathed him in love, it's unlikely Aegon will be willing to give it up — and it shows from the way he looks just after the coronation.

Meanwhile, Rhaenyra is also not eager to give up her royal title, so season 2 is off to a bad start. The filming is set to kick off in March 2023, and the premiere date is yet to be scheduled by HBO.
