Wonka Early Reviews Are Quite Optimistic
Critics claim that the new iteration of the Willy Wonka story has turned out to be the fairy tale everyone needs before Christmas.
Many viewers praise director Paul King, who also created Paddington, for making a warm movie in the spirit of the projects about the bear in a red hat.
And Hugh Grant, who played a representative of the little Oompa-Loompa people, gets special attention for his charming performance.
Hugh Grant Hated His Wonka Filming Experience
However, the actor himself did not get much pleasure from the filming of Wonka. In fact, he didn't enjoy it at all. In a recent interview, the actor admitted that his experience with motion-capture was "drivel."
Due to the nature of his role, a large number of cameras and other equipment were constantly aimed at Grant, to later transform the 5 feet 10 inches actor into a tiny elf-like creature:
“It was like a crown of thorns, very uncomfortable. I made a big fuss about it. I couldn’t have hated the whole thing more.”
Let's remember Ian McKellen bursting into tears on the set of The Hobbit because all the filming was done on a green background. He would have definitely understood Hugh Grant.
What Will Wonka Be About?
The filmmakers came up with the plot themselves – author Roald Dahl did not write an origin story for Willy Wonka.
At the beginning of the movie, Willy arrives in an unnamed city that resembles either Rome or London or some other European city. He has a dream – to open his own chocolate shop, and not with just any chocolate, but with the most delicious chocolate in the world.
However, Wonka quickly comes into contact with the harsh reality – on his way to realizing his dream, he is constantly hindered by the sinister chocolate cartel, corrupt police officers and sneaky con men.
According to critics, if you're not in the Christmas spirit yet, Wonka will help you find it. You will be able to see Timothée Chalamet singing in a big hat as early as December 15th.
