Harry Potter's Tom Felton Books a Lead Role in a Unique Sci-Fi Movie
From the Wizarding World to a dystopian future, Draco Malfoy is finally standing up to injustice and corruption — but don’t tell his father about it.
Thanks to his iconic part in the Harry Potter movies, Tom Felton became a global star, but due to his being so closely associated with Draco Malfoy, the actor saw little success in finding prominent lead parts after leaving the Wizarding World. Felton’s career has been going well all these years, and yet, he just could book another breakthrough gig that would free him from his Harry Potter chains.
Until now, that is: Tom Felton is heading straight into a dystopian future.
What Is Tom Felton’s New Gig?
Tom Felton is ready to switch his wand for a modern weapon. According to Variety, the Draco Malfoy star recently booked a lead part in the upcoming action sci-fi movie Altered. It will be directed by Iron Sky’s Timo Vuorensola and is expected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025. The movie’s production budget is around $15M.
Altered is set in an alternative present where genetic modifications are widespread and serve as some sort of a distinction between classes: there are those who can afford to be perfect and those who can’t. Of course, there are also the outcasts who aren’t altered in any way, and Tom Felton’s character is one of them.
Together with his co-star Elizaveta Bugulova, he will attempt to stand up to the injustice of the society, fighting genetic disparity and corrupt politicians and corporations to the best of their abilities which, without gene alterations, aren’t a lot.
Will Altered Break the Potter Curse?
Most aspiring actors dream of big breakthrough roles, and Tom Felton was among the few fortunate ones who got theirs really quickly. Thanks to the Harry Potter franchise, Felton’s name is known all around the world, but while the actor loves the movies, they came with a severe disadvantage known as the Harry Potter curse.
Young adult franchises often trap their stars, making the audience forever associate them with those characters, and Harry Potter is one such case. Out of all the young Harry Potter stars, only Robert Pattinson has managed to completely shake off the curse — though he was trapped by Twilight more than anything — but others, including Tom Felton, are still widely seen as their decades-old characters.
Will Altered be the second breakthrough for Felton? Will he rise free from the curse? We’ll have to wait and see, but the movie’s premise definitely sounds promising.
