Halo TV Series Is Only Good if You Manage to Suffer Through Season 1
Too bad so much money went to waste.
Summary:
- Halo is a military sci-fi media franchise that originated in 2001 with the shooter video game Halo: Combat Evolved.
- In 2022, the Halo TV show released its first season, which was heavily criticized by the franchise fans.
- So far, season 2, released on Paramount Plus, receives much better reviews from the audience.
Halo the TV series, which will be released on Paramount Plus in 2022, is the best example to prove that sometimes having a lot of money, access to the best CGI sources, a lot of lore and a brand attached to the project does not guarantee a quality release.
A lot of people had high hopes for the show, having grown up playing Halo games and learning the backstories of the characters. The rich sci-fi world allowed for a project of truly unparalleled scale, but the opportunity was squandered and the first season unexpectedly bombed upon its premiere.
To this day, it stands with 52% or audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Some viewers decided to cut all ties with the show after season 1, in utter disbelief that the team behind it could somehow fix everything that was ruined. However, with a change of showrunner and a visible change in approach to canon, Halo seems to deserve a second chance.
Is Halo Season 2 Better Than Season 1?
As soon as the show's first showrunner, Steven Kane, was replaced by David Wiener, the cast started teasing some big changes in store for viewers. It was hard to believe that the show would change everything in one season, and it didn't. But the changes that have been made are worth noting.
Redditor doyoulike_pineapple shared a post that many other viewers of the show agree with. In their opinion, the show finally took a turn for the better in episode 3, and the next episode solidifies that sentiment.
“Unlike S1, where the makers of the show just ran with low-quality scenes, making the final battle feel like 90s Power Rangers, I can feel that genuine thought and care has been put into the show this time around. I don’t mind small sacrifices when the rest of the cinematic experience is consistently high-quality, and it doesn’t feel like a student project,” they said.
Considering the fact that one of the most common points of criticism for Halo season 1 was the lack of thought put into the characters, and visible lack of knowledge of the original lore created within the world of the game franchise, David Wiener managed to take the writing in a direction that all Halo fans can appreciate.
From the well, to new characters like Corporal Perez, to improved directorial choices, it now appears that Halo may be getting a third season. And if it does, it will bring Paramount Plus the recognition the platform was probably hoping for the first time around. This just goes to show the importance of learning from past mistakes.
If you are intrigued by the changes Halo has made, be sure to catch up on all the season 2 episodes released so far on Paramount Plus, and tune in every Thursday to make sure you never miss another one.
