Grey’s Anatomy’s Big Move: What Will Replace ABC’s Signature Show This Fall?
Season 20 doesn’t seem to be going so well.
Summary:
- Grey's Anatomy has already faced some major changes in its 20th season, with Ellen Pompeo stepping down as a series regular.
- Now, the Grey-less Grey's Anatomy will have to move from its usual Thursday 9 p.m. slot on ABC.
- According to the new 2024/2025 Fall schedule, the show will air at 10 p.m. instead.
There are many changes coming to Grey's Anatomy, and not all of them will be exciting for the general audience. While the show has managed to survive major cast changes and allow Ellen Pompeo to explore other career opportunities outside of the medical drama she has been a part of for 20 years, it will now face another challenge.
Fans who are used to tuning in to Grey's Anatomy the old-fashioned way, by turning on the TV every Thursday at 9 p.m., will have to change their habits and stay up for an extra hour. Here's why ABC made the decision.
ABC 2024/2025 Fall Schedule Changes
Even though Grey's Anatomy has already been renewed for season 21, fans of the show still have plenty to worry about. First and foremost, ABC is moving the show an hour later into the night to 10 p.m., now that the schedule for the upcoming 2024/2025 broadcast season has been officially announced.
However, Disney TV Group President Craig Erwich isn't too worried about these changes affecting the show's ratings:
“We know that among [Grey’s] viewers, they are not just sizable but very loyal audience, but the majority of those in that audience, well over 80%, watches the show on multiple platforms, not specifically live, so we think the move is going to be minimal, as well as it will provide an incredible lead into our local news at 11,” he said.
What Will Be on ABC Instead of Grey's Anatomy?
Grey's is being moved to 10 p.m. in favor of Ryan Murphy's new medical drama, Doctor Odyssey. The show will follow a doctor named Max, who works as the head of a small but mighty medical team aboard a luxury cruise ship. Dealing with all kinds of strange cases, Max and his team also have plenty of time to entertain themselves.
The lead role of Max will be played by Dawson's Creek star Joshua Jackson. Don Johnson and Phillipa Soo have also been announced for the new series.
Doctor Odyssey will follow another of Murphy's shows, 9-1-1, which was recently picked up by Fox following its cancellation. Thus, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., ABC will have a Ryan Murphy block, and given the best spots for his shows, the network clearly has high hopes for the partnership with the producer.
For now, before the end of the season, you can still catch the last episodes of Grey's Anatomy season 20 every Thursday at the usual time on ABC.
