Grey's Anatomy: 5 Strangest Medical Cases That Defy Logic (Or What's Left of It)
Let's just say there was no shortage of crazy.
Grey's Anatomy goes above and beyond to provide fans with their weekly dose of drama, romance, and rivalries among the doctors and interns, but one of the biggest attractions to the medical series for fans are the patients brought in, and their unique illnesses and injuries.
1. Two train passengers connected by a pole
Two strangers are rushed into the hospital with one thing in common, a huge metal pole that has impaled them both during a horrific train accident. If the visuals were not shocking enough, both patients were alive and conscious when brought in, going as far as to crack a joke or two together. Unfortunately, in the end, only one survived their injuries.
2. The man with tree hands
This storyline was actually based on a real case, which made it even more fascinating.
In season 7 of Grey's Anatomy, a patient is brought into the hospital with an extremely untreated case of HPV (Human papillomavirus) which resulted in his body being covered in tree-like warts. His hands were the worst affected, looking like tree branches or trunks. If the state of this patient had not already made viewers uneasy, Dr. Bailey cuts part of a "branch" off and a spider runs out.
3. Girl who could hear inside her body
Few things could be as freaky and confusing as being able to hear your own organs, but this was exactly the case with a young patient brought into the hospital. She was misdiagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and her parents wanted to put her in a psych ward but doctors were able to diagnose a rare condition affecting the lining in her eardrums just in time. Turns out she wasn't crazy at all.
A viewer later wrote to the show to tell them that her son had been diagnosed with the same condition, and they had found out after watching this particular episode and bringing the condition up with a doctor.
4. Patient with toxic blood
Another episode inspired by a real-life incident. A cancer patient's combination of chemotherapy medications and natural supplements turned her blood toxic, but no doctors were aware of this until they opened her up to operate, and were all knocked unconscious in the operating room.
5. Man with a bomb inside his body
Having a patient brought in with an explosive lodged in their torso was a shock factor enough, but Grey's Anatomy decided to take it to the next level. It turned out that the "bomb" was still active and could detonate, and in one of the tensest moments on the show to date, Meredith has to keep her hand on the explosive to prevent it from being set off.

The explosive is safely passed on to the bomb squad, but as fans breathed a sigh of relief, it detonates, killing two of the bomb squad members and knocking Meredith off her feet.
