Fans gave up on the series finale just as fast after that.

It's hard to imagine a more disappointing TV finale than Game of Thrones. Even though the show is now considered a classic, and there aren't many shows that can compare to it in terms of production and writing quality, Game of Thrones will forever be remembered for its failed season 8 and all the characters that were completely ruined by it.

Daenerys Targaryen, who was the fan-favorite from the beginning and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne in the eyes of many viewers, suffered arguably the worst twist of all. Instead of fulfilling her duties, Daenerys went completely insane and was eventually killed by her own nephew and lover, Jon Snow.

It's safe to say that the majority of the fandom finds this twist unnecessary as a whole, but some would be willing to accept it if it were done with more grace by the writers. After all, Game of Thrones has never been too kind to any of its characters, but it hasn't lacked for logic.

Daenerys' storyline could have been salvaged and more widely accepted if the writers and producers had taken the time to create the right conditions for it. If viewers saw more of her reign and her power over the North slowly slipping through her fingers, her desperation would be more understandable.

Her war against Cersei could have added to the buildup, too, if only it had been shown very clearly how Jon's orders overrode her own. It would also have added to the drama between characters whose stories still feel half-told in the original.

Luckily, there's still a chance for fans of the series to get more explanation about everything that happened from George R. R. Martin himself, as the final book of the A Song of Ice and Fire series hasn't been released yet.

Would you rather George R. R. Martin changed the ending from the show completely, or just explained and expanded it in the book?

Although at this point many viewers believe that the book will be pretty close to the events of the show, there has been no confirmation from the author himself, so don't give up on it too soon. Keep an eye out for news on the release of The Winds of Winter!
