The writers of Game of Thrones discuss the aftermath of the controversial finale.

Summary:

  • Game of Thrones is an example of one of the greatest shows that left fans extremely disappointed with a controversial ending written by David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
  • Benioff admitted that he accepted the fact that many people didn't like the show's ending
  • Weiss said that the last time he Googled himself was in 2013, which significantly reduced his stress levels.
  • While the finale and season 8 of Game of Thrones were indeed controversial, there is no denying the fact that Benioff and Weiss were two of the people who made this show great.

Every era has a show that will never be forgotten. Sitcoms in the 21st century continue to be made in the mold of I Love Lucy, which debuted in the fifties. Twin Peaks in the early nineties added a fair amount of mysticism to the traditional detective story, and Lost in the 2000s showed that a dozen storylines in the past and future were far from the limit.

Lost also became an example of how to ruin an intriguing, multi-layered story with a ridiculous ending.

Benioff and Weiss Couldn’t Handle GoT’s Finale

Game of Thrones is the most important TV series of our time and is also a huge spoiler for A Song of Ice and Fire, which has been unfinished for more than 25 years. Was it really possible to end the epic saga with dignity? Perhaps not. At the very least, showrunners and writers David Benioff and Dan Weiss definitely weren't up to the task.

It's unlikely that fan anger has ever been as widespread as it was after the finale of Game of Thrones – Benioff and Weiss were called the most incompetent writers in history, and petitions were signed demanding that the eighth season be rewritten by other writers.

Benioff and Weiss Address Backlash from Fans

Recently, Benioff and Weiss spoke for the first time about the controversial ending of Game of Thrones. Benioff admitted that, like any screenwriter, he would like 100% of the audience to like what he has created, but he has already accepted that this is not the case, and added:

“You can get so bogged down in public opinion that you spend your whole life googling things and trying to find people who felt one way or the other way.”

Weiss, for his part, admitted that even positive reviews don't always elicit a positive response (let alone negative and frankly devastating ones), and that he hasn't Googled himself since 2013, which has reduced his stress level by 50 percent.

It Was Benioff and Weiss Who Made GoT Brilliant

We can criticize the eighth season for as long as we want and sign petitions, but it won't make it any better. Benioff and Weiss look like the villains who ruined a great show, but it was them who made it great.

These two, along with screenwriter Bryan Cogman, casting director Nina Gold, designer Michele Clapton, and dozens of other talented people, teamed up and worked the magic of reviving the interest in fantasy that had seemingly died after Peter Jackson's The Return of the King in 2003.

They gave us the Red Wedding, let us say goodbye to Hodor, and blew up the Great Sept of Baelor before our eyes. Yes, without the source material, the quality of the show diminished. But for the past, for six good, brilliant seasons, the writers can be forgiven.
