Good Omens Season 3 May Be Even More Canon-Faithful Than Chapter 2
A new update reveals that season 2 is actually Neil Gaiman's solo creation.
After it was announced that the TV series Good Omens would be getting a second season, despite the fact that the source material consisted of only one book, which was fully covered in the first season, fans wondered what the story would be based on.
Various reports initially suggested that season 2 of the acclaimed series would be based on the unused ideas for the sequel novel conceived by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, as the latter sadly passed away in 2015 before the second book was even written.
However, a recent update has revealed that this is not exactly what will happen.
In an interview with SFX, Neil Gaiman, who is in charge of the TV adaptation, confessed that the second season will not be an adaptation of the unreleased sequel novel, but rather a "bridge" connecting the stories of it and the original novel.
According to the author, the story is more suitable for the "hypothetical season three," which is apparently already planned, and that he "did not feel that we could drive straight from season one into that."
So, considering all of the above, the existence of season 3 has been officially confirmed, albeit at a very early stage for now. Moreover, if it does see the light of day, it might feel even more faithful to the original, since Pratchett was involved in creating the story for it.
While most fans are eager to see where the story takes Aziraphale and Crowley, some remain skeptical about whether the show needed to be renewed for season 2 in the first place.
They believe it was nothing more than a desire to capitalize on the success of the highly acclaimed first season and an act of disrespect to Terry Pratchett.
Either way, we will soon see if Neil Gaiman has succeeded in creating his own story leading up to the events of the sequel. And if it turns out to be a worthy successor to the debut season, the show's renewal for season 3 can be considered a done deal.
All episodes of Good Omens season 2 will premiere on July 28, 2023.
