Good Omens season 2 is an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish, but something about the surprising finale doesn’t quite add up.

The sequel season of the series ended on a huge cliffhanger. Crowley confessed his feelings to Aziraphale, only to be asked to return to Heaven with him as a newly restored angel and his right-hand man – Aziraphale got promoted by Metatron himself, who offered him Gabriel’s old job. Good Omens season 2’s finale saw the ineffable husbands kiss (but not make up) and drift apart for the time being.

There is, however, a but to all of this. Some Tumblr fans believe that Metatron has in fact convinced Aziraphale to take the job through rather questionable (even abhorrent) means, and it all has to do with the coffee he has brought him earlier.

Throughout the season, people have picked up on a number of clues that something must be wrong with that coffee. First, Aziraphale doesn’t even like coffee that much – for instance, in episode 1, when Crowley is drinking coffee, the angel is clearly looking at him with judgment in his eyes.

In episode 6, when Metatron hands him his coffee, Aziraphale actually seems like he wants to refuse the drink. Then he takes a sip of the coffee, and Metatron immediately asks him if he likes it (too much attention to coffee, don’t you think?), to which Aziraphale quickly replies that he does, even though it doesn’t look like it.

This is not even the end of it. Aziraphale doesn’t agree to take the job right away, and yet the higher-up angel still hands the reins over to Muriel, entrusting them with the bookstore. How could he have known that Aziraphale would say yes?

In the next scene, Aziraphale is not acting like himself when Crowley is professing his love for him. He interrupts him at such a delicate moment, starts defending Heaven (the same Heaven that tried to kill both him and Crowley) all of a sudden, and keeps insisting that Crowley become an angel and join him in transforming Heaven.

It’s not in Aziraphale’s nature to be so assertive, especially for no reason whatsoever. The only logical explanation is that Metatron knew that he wouldn’t accept the offer willingly, so he tampered with his coffee to make sure that his plan succeeded. Whatever unfolds in Good Omens season 3 is going to be big, that’s for sure.

Do you think that the coffee is to blame?
