The 2015 feature film was a disappointment in comparison to the original book, and all hope is now on HBO.

Summary:

  • HBO is adapting Gillian Flynn's book Dark Places into a miniseries, with Flynn serving as co-showrunner, writer and co-creator.
  • Gillian Flynn is best known for her novels Sharp Objects and Gone Girl, which were successfully adapted.
  • The first feature film adaptation of Dark Places, starring Charlize Theron, was a critical and commercial failure, so fans are hoping the miniseries will be a worthy adaptation.

From an early age, Gillian Flynn had two passions – books and horror movies. Which is not surprising, since her mother was a professor of a reading-comprehension and her father was a film professor.

Each of Gillian Flynn's books is incredibly popular and has been made into a movie or a TV show, all because of her ability to capture the atmosphere of small provincial towns.

Her works are always incredibly dynamic and the plot intrigue is well constructed. At the same time, darkness reigns in all of her books, and the characters are never divided into good and bad.

HBO is Adapting Dark Places

Now, after the success of Sharp Objects and Gone Girl, HBO is adapting Gillian’s another work, Dark Places, as a miniseries, with Flynn serving as co-showrunner, writer and co-creator.

However, this is not the first adaptation of this novel – a film of the same name directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner and starring Charlize Theron was released in 2015.

The movie tells the story of a woman who, as a child, survived a satanic massacre in which her mother and sisters were killed. For 25 years, Libby lived in full confidence that the terrible crime was committed by her older brother, a member of a satanic cult, who was convicted on the testimony of little Libby.

But when she is approached by amateur detectives who are investigating her brother's case and suspect that the man was innocent, Libby is forced to remember everything she has forgotten and find out what really happened.

2015’s Dark Places Was a Total Failure

However, the film was neither a commercial nor a critical success – Dark Places grossed only five million dollars worldwide, not even covering its budget, and its Rotten Tomatoes rating is now 23% from critics and 33% from audiences.

While most readers enjoyed the book, the movie was criticized for failing to capture the suspense and tense atmosphere of the book, which is a hallmark of Flynn's work. And even the brilliant cast of Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult and Chloe Moretz could not save Dark Places in 2015.

There is no release date for the HBO miniseries yet, but fans of the author are already hoping that this time Gillian Flynn's outstanding work will receive a worthy adaptation.
