Is everything Dustin Hurt does just for show's sake?

During seasons 1 through 4, "Dakota" Fred Hurt was a part of Discovery's Gold Rush and much of the time its main attraction.

Many fans were disappointed when he and the other "Dakota Boys" left the reality series after Season 4 but were happy to see Fred get a solo spinoff, Gold Rush: White Water, which premiered in January 2018 and is currently in its sixth season.

The show follows crews as they mine the McKinley and Cahoon creeks in the Haines Borough, Alaska, using an unconventional method of dredging.

Dustin Hurt followed in his father's footsteps, transitioning from the cast of the original show to the new spinoff. While it was Fred's success that sparked the creation of White Water, Dustin is also a major contributor to the show.

His net worth, estimated at around a million dollars, serves as a testament to his level of television fame. However, viewers are not entirely happy with Dustin's behavior on the show. In fact, many moments annoy them.

For example, fans feel that Dustin went too far in Season 5 by isolating his veteran crew members from the newbies, depriving the latter group of any support.

In addition, fans have urged Dustin to abandon a claim in McKinley Creek because of the potential danger it poses to his crew without providing significant returns.

Cases like these two prove that putting the crew in dangerous situations for the sake of unrealistic endeavors is a common thing for Dustin. And it doesn't sit well with viewers, who take to social media to express their frustration.

"Dustin is like: Me, me, me, my, my, my, I, I, I. Self-centered is an understatement with that guy. Apparently, nobody else is out there with him," a fan wrote on Reddit.

Fans feel that Dustin can be hostile towards people and has a very short fuse. He comes across as a mouthy, know-it-all, my way or the highway, always looking for conflict kind of guy.

His questionable attitude has been the subject of fan discussion more than once. And the viewers think that a lot of what Dustin does is strictly to make the show. He just couldn't make a profit without a paycheck from Discovery.

But since the network is paying for his adventures, maybe Dustin is doing everything right?
