Gibbs’s Weird Habit in NCIS Has a Heartbreaking Background Story

For years on TV, NCIS has always kept a little bit of mystery about all of its essential characters, and one of them has finally been unveiled only some time after the show’s biggest figure officially left it for good.

Ever since his first appearance in NCIS back in 2003, Leroy Jethro Gibbs made his fans spend hours coming up with various theories regarding the character’s quirky habit that neither the show nor Gibbs himself never explained.

However, the whole mystery was solved thanks to the other actor, and now it seems like Gibbs’s upcoming spinoff may address this issue in a truly heartbreaking plot twist.

Throughout its long-standing run, NCIS repeatedly made it clear that Gibbs actually never cared about locking his front door, which kinda exposed his house as a place for a potential break-in. This matter has never been properly addressed by the show and thus kept torturing its fans until the franchise’s brand new podcast came around.

The program titled Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch and hosted by NCIS’ actors Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo has recently featured the series’ other major figure Sean Murray who in NCIS portrayed Special Agent Timothy McGee.

Suddenly having brought Gibbs up, Cote de Pablo asked her co-stars whether they knew the real reason for Gibbs’ carelessness (which, as it turned out, they had no clue about) and then finally gave an answer for a very common question stating that “he has already lost what was most important to him, so he actually doesn’t care.”

The explanation of Gibbs’s lack of interest in keeping himself safe in his house comes as a reference to the character’s biggest tragedy of many years back, when he lost his first wife Shannon and their daughter Kelly who had been brutally murdered.

Since this is what happened during Gibbs’ early years that weren’t featured in the original show, the disheartening plot twist may potentially make its way to NCIS’ upcoming spinoff NCIS: Origins that will follow Gibbs during his start and first years as an NCIS Special Agent.

The character’s biggest loss in life finally getting more details may shatter a couple of hearts, yet it’s still compelling to see how exactly the whole process of mourning his family transformed Gibbs and eventually made him the way he was in NCIS.

NCIS: Origins is set to arrive at CBS this fall.
