Attention horror fans: this banger is coming to the platform!

Summary:

  • 2 years ago, one horror movie made the Internet crazy about it, as it offered a well-built story of the female Joker set in a surreal Technicolor world.
  • It centered on a young woman trapped in her family’s homestead while dreaming of becoming a star.
  • This hyped feature will soon be available for streaming on Prime.

The year of 2022 was quite fruitful for horror features, as we saw such genre’s gems, as Barbarian, The Menu, Smile and Scream. However, they all didn’t make enough noise to be everywhere on the Net not only at the time, but over the course of these 2 years too.

There is one movie which obviously managed to do so, given the enormous amount of memes, viral videos and Halloween costumes inspired by it. It’d be surprising to hear that it appears to be a sequel, but it definitely overhyped the original movie.

Its plot focuses on the life of a mentally ill young woman forced to live with her abusive parents and her husband at the farm. She can’t stand this way of life and lusts for the glamorous life of a chorus girl or a film star, but her dreams don't seem to come true.

You may think that it’s the girl who is the one that suffers from the evil of the world here. Yes, indeed, her overprotective mother is initially perceived like the movie’s antagonist, but we’re quick to realize the main villain is her daughter, preparing us for a series of acts of violence and bloody revenge on her family.

The film’s visual style is inspired not by the horrors, but rather by Old Hollywood musicals, like The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Mary Poppins (1964), with its Technicolor style. Here it serves to make the narration seem more surreal and extremely scary.

At the same time, the main storyline and the evil performed by the heroine are quite reminiscent of the female version of Joaquin Phoenix ’s Joker (2019). The horror feature offers a similar version of the establishment of the villain, caused by the society around.

Just like the Oscar-winning Phoenix, the leading actress is the main key to the success of the movie. Titled Pearl, X’s sequel is starred by the scream queen Mia Goth, and she’s definitely a star, famous for her bright roles in Nymphomaniac (2013) and Suspiria (2018).

“I think I might’ve loved that more than X. The melodramatic Technicolor style paired with the slasher elements was just outstanding,” concludes Redditor @sandiskplayer34 about this 93%-rated masterpiece.

Luckily, Pearl will be added to Prime Video ’s catalog already on May 16, so don’t miss the opportunity to watch one of the best horrors of the last few years.
