Georgie & Mandy Spinoff Doomed to Repeat Young Sheldon's Fatal Mistake

It's easy to blame spin-offs for trying to cash in on popular franchises. The worst of them rely too much on what came before and offer nothing of their own. But the best of them find an unusual perspective, create new circumstances for familiar characters, or invent new characters for a familiar universe.

The writers of Young Sheldon deliberately avoided trying to replicate the style of their predecessor, instead offering a warm, nostalgic show about a child prodigy who is not always understood by those around him.

George Sr. Had Been Young Sheldon's Biggest Problem All Along

However, one fan complaint has lived with this undoubtedly outstanding series for all seven seasons – the personality of Sheldon's father, George Sr.

In the early seasons of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon Cooper regularly mentioned the difficult trials that befell him in his childhood. There are also numerous references to Sheldon's father being a drinker. All of this shaped Cooper's difficult personality.

But if we look at Young Sheldon's portrayal of Sheldon's childhood, we see that the little genius grew up surrounded by love and care, that his entire family life revolved around him – if anything, his older brother George and sister Missy had much more reason to be offended by their parents' inattention than he did.

And as for Sheldon's George Sr., although he holds a bottle of beer in almost every frame in which he appears, we have never seen him drunk, never once did beer interfere with his work, and never once did he refuse to fulfill his parental duty.

And the fact that we knew from the beginning that George Sr. was going to die was a problem, and because the writers made him such a likable character, it made the farewell all the more heartbreaking.

George & Mandy's First Marriage's Story is Predetermined

Now fans are worried that the spin-off George & Mandy's First Marriage will go the same way – in the title we literally see that these two will get divorced. And this is a global problem of the TBBT universe – no matter what material the creators of the prequel take on, it has already been mentioned in the original series, and most likely hardcore fans already know the ending of this story.

A more unexpected but relevant example in this case is Furiosa. The audience already knows that Furiosa will not reach her goal until Fury Road. We also suspect that one of the other major characters will not survive in the end: otherwise we would have seen him in the previous movie.

George Miller had a story with absolutely nothing to build intrigue around: the ending was obvious, the fates of most of the characters were predetermined.

Fans Are Not Sure The New Spin-Off Will Be Able to Solve Its Obvious Problems

The fact that the audience is familiar with the story before it begins has always been a problem that Young Sheldon only partially deals with.

And as we know, franchises that constantly add spin-offs often lose quality, so Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage is in danger of not being the project that viewers will wait for and watch each week with the same interest as Young Sheldon.
