Game of Thrones almost got it right, but then screwed up again.

For years that it had its fans glued to the screens, Game of Thrones ’ franchise has been infamously inaccurate regarding the rules that George R.R. Martin established in his novels, but this time a major mistake actually backfired.

Both Game of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon never got things right about the Targaryens’ dragons and the way they functioned, hence why we have seen so many inconsistencies in the fantastic creatures’ behavior or habits or even their manner of existence after all.

With that in mind, it’s still pretty difficult to notice yet another problem that House of the Dragon created for the fire-spitting beasts, and this time even George R.R. Martin couldn’t remain silent.

Reaching out to the show’s fans after the latest episode titled The Red Dragon and the Gold was dropped last Sunday, the author shared all the excitement that the viewers had stating that the huge dragon battle featured in the episode was like nothing else that the series had ever shown.

However, there’s still a place for an issue when it comes to House of the Dragon’s portrayal of dragons, and Martin couldn’t help but notice this.

Though this time it had nothing to do with the actual beasts, House Targaryen for some reason still got it all wrong making a four-legged dragon its symbol that would later on adorn the dynasty’s official flag.

As George R.R. Martin explained, he never intended to depict the Targaryens’ sigil this way since, even though dragons never existed in real life, they still had two legs just like all normal animals.

According to the author’s message in his blog, “four-legged dragons exist only in heraldry. No animal that has ever lived on Earth has six limbs. Birds have two legs and two wings, bats the same, ditto pteranodons and other flying dinosaurs, etc”.

Ironically, Game of Thrones initially understood the assignment even before it was explained in detail. The show’s first 4 seasons and the most part of the fifth one saw Daenerys traveling across Westeros under a flag that had a two-legged dragon on it.

However, since then something went completely wrong and the rest of the series gave a major delusion suggesting that only a four-legged dragon could be the Targaryens’ symbol.

As Martin lamented further, “A couple years on, HOUSE OF THE DRAGON decided the heraldry should be consistent with GAME OF THRONES.. but they went with the bad sigil rather than the good one.”

Now, considering that the author has said it all about the prequel’s embarrassing mistake, the chances to see this being ignored by the showrunners once again are still pretty high, but, hopefully, never zero.
